Thread: The Invasion of Gaul

  1. #1

    Default The Invasion of Gaul

The Aedui invade from the north with 28,000 infantry and 2,000 cavalry. For every year the Gauls are not defeated, there is a 5/20 chance of every other Gallic tribe joining the Gallic confederation. (Subject to modifiers for otherwise established good relations)

    Dumnorix: +1 survival, +1 battles, +1 rearguard.

Consul Tappulus leads his four legions from Massalia (Narbonensis I) to Narbonensis II. 800 cavalry is sent forth as a vanguard to screen against enemy attacks and watch their movements. Should they be attacked, the cavalry units will retreat back to the main army and try to lure enemy units there to engage.

Once the Aedui army is sighted, the legions will get into battle formation and go on the offensive against the enemy.

The Segusiavi lowland area was lightly forested and flat. It is here that the Gallic army looked to make its stand against the Romans. Easy early victories had bolstered their courage, and they knew if they could defeat the Romans here, their pillage could continue. After a short scuffle, the Roman cavalry returns with news that at least 18,000 Gauls were in the plain.

As the Roman legions enter the Segusiavi lowlands, Consul Tappulus looks over the force he was facing. The Gauls were a fearsome people, born for battle and war. Lucius knew that this would be an easy victory, with the Aedui having about as many men as he did. However, they were mostly a large band of warriors fighting together, each man seeking glory for himself. Romans were also bred for war, but the soldiers of the legion had been vigorously trained and molded into a proper army, a being of its own that would crush the thousands of smaller beings that faced it. Consul Tappulus prayed that this time, things would not turn out different.

A messenger is sent forth to the Aedui camp, requesting a parley between the Aedui king and the Roman consul in between the armies.

A released Gallic prisoner returns to the Consul with a basket. Within was the head of the emissary.

The consul shook his head. It was to be expected, but no one would be able to accuse him of not trying to solve this without further bloodshed. War it would be, so Tappulus drew his sword and pointed it forward.

"Soldiers of Rome, it is time we show these barbarians what it means to stand against our republic! To arms!"

    Roman Orders
    Roman Army of Consul Tappulus
    4 Legions (20,000 men)
    600 Medium Cavalry

    Commanders
-Consul Lucius Villius Tappulus: Survival +1, Autocritas +3, Wealth +2 (Ludii Romani)
-Tribunus Militum Lucius Aelius Sejanus (XII): Battles +3
-Tribunus Militum Quintus Fabius Ambustus (XIII): Battles +1, Wealth +1
-Tribunus Militum Marcus Villius Tappulus (XIV): Battle +1, Survival +1

The infantry will line up in two lines, 20 cohorts in each - 12th and 13th at the front, 14th and 11th in the rear. The cavalry will evenly be deployed on the flanks. The Roman army will then advance on the Gaul enemy in slow marching speed.

Once the army is close enough, pilum will be thrown and the legionaries will continue at marching speed on the enemy. The first line will engage the enemy in close combat, while the second line is held in reserve for the time being. The cavalry will screen for any potential flanking attacks.

If the cavalry on the flanks are beaten back, 5 cohorts from the rear will move up on the left and/or right flank to defend against flanking attacks. If they are able to push back flank attacks, they will move to flank the enemy main line.

The remaining reserve in the second line will join the main line from behind and begin to push the enemy back, or if any holes are created that must be filled up or pushed through. Should the cohorts that protect the flank get the opportunity to flank the Aedui army, the second line will join the main line.

@Ponti, will you continue to RP the Gaulic forces ? If so send in orders and I'll moderate this. Will take 12ish hours counted from now because it's midnight here and work tomorrow.

D20, 5/20 chance. Rolled a 4. The Gauls receive reinforcements. Couldn't find if troops are calculated by a roll so I just added a reasonable number.

Brennus of the Aquitani joins the rebellion. Together with 8000 infantry and 2000 cavalry.
