    Edward IV

EDWARD PLANTAGENET, KING OF ENGLAND, KING OF FRANCE, LORD OF IRELAND

    Age: 24
Marital status: Married, to Margaret Percy
    Traits:
    Battles: +2
    Survival: + 2
    Duels: +2

Having won his crown at Towton and defended it again at Wallingford, Richard Plantagenet's son has more than proven his military worth as England's King. Gifted in the ways of war, he stands head and shoulders above most men, a mountain of muscle and sinew not too dissimilar to his forebear, Lionel of Clarence. However, complacency, over-generosity and misjudgement had made Edward soft, willing to sit idle as others ruled in his stead; the Duke of Norfolk assuming almost absolute control of the country in the waning months of 1465. Edward's apparent exile to Windsor has revitalised the determination and vigour he had before Towton, and more than ever he is eager to regain his crown from this apparent usurper, and set about proving why it is he felt himself worthy for the throne of England in the first place.

George Plantagenet, the Duke of Clarence

    Age: 17 (b. 1449)
Marital Status: Betrothed to Isabel Neville, heir to the Earldom of Warwick
    Children: 0
    Traits (5 points): +1 Battle, +1 Duel, +1 Charisma, +2 Wealth (+10%)

The middle child of the late Duke of York, Richard Plantagenet, and younger brother to His Grace, Edward IV, George was named Duke of Clarence upon the ascension of his brother to the throne of England after the battle of Towton. He would gain a greater standing in the realm when the Earl of Salisbury, his guardian, gained royal permission to betroth the young Duke of Clarence to the future Countess of Warwick, Isabel Neville, daughter of the late Richard Neville. An ambitious young man, George has shown that he is loyal to Edward, but only to advance himself among the Peerage of England. It is greatly assumed that if Edward IV were to die, George would surely be King upon his older brother's death. Yet the Duke of Clarence does not have a taste for the throne yet, only for more land and coin to enhance himself.

    Woodville

    LADY ELIZABETH GREY
    Nee Woodville.

    Born 1437 (29).

    Status: Married...
Children: Thomas Grey (born 1455), Richard Grey (1457), Elizabeth of York (posibly illegitimate, born 1466).

    Traits (7):
    +3 Survival
    +3 Charisma
    +1 Wealth

    BIOGRAPHY:

Lady Elizabeth was born of the unequal marriage of the widow Duchess of Bedford, Jacquetta of Luxembourg (daughter of Peter de Luxembourg, count of Brienne, Saint-Pol and Conversano) and Sir Richard Woodville, a mere knight of an ancient but humble family; he was later created Baron Rivers in 1448. They had met in the household of John of Lancaster, duke of Bedford and Jacquetta's elderly husband, where Sir Richard had served as chancellor; they married only two years after Bedford's death in 1435, Elizabeth being born the same year. Without firstly seeking the king's approval for their union. Their daughter became a truly beautiful and comely woman, with heavy-lidded eyes and a cascade of golden hair, who married the 6th Baroness Ferrers of Groby's heir (she was a widow of Edward Grey, who later married John Bourchier), Sir John Grey in 1452. Alas, the heir to the barony died in the battle of Towton in 1461.

A young and atractive widow, she met at some point Edward IV, soon-to-be crowned King of England, with Elizabeth seemingly becoming his paramour. Quite ironically, because her first husband had died fighting York. Edward ended marrying Lady Margaret Percy in 1465, in the wake of the First Lancastrian Invasion and under the pressure of the Duke of Norfolk, the man behind the throne. However, some whisper the King had actually, secretly, married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464...

    Richard Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester

    Age: 14 (both 1452)
    Spouse: N/A
    Traits: 4 pts to start
    +2 Duels
    +1 Battles
    +1 Wealth (5%)

The Duke of Gloucester is the youngest of the sons of Richard Plantagenet the elder, 3rd Duke of York and his namesake, and thus the littlest brother of King Edward IV of England. At present he is still almost a boy, having just entered into his adolescent years and being little younger than his second brother Edmund of Rutland when the latter was butchered by the Baron Clifford, yet he is considered wise beyond his years by his tutors: calm, even stoic, coolly rational compared to his boisterous elder kin, introverted to the point of seeming cold at times but not entirely lacking in compassion, and filled with a dutiful determination. That determination has served him well in combating his scoliosis, as despite the pain in his twisted back moving him to tears some nights, he never allowed it to stop him from diligently sparring in the yard at least once a day in a bid to suppress it entirely.

As Richard passed his fourteenth birthday, he knew that the time for him to start actively serving his brother the King was fast approaching. The latest developments he had heard in that regard was that he was to be assigned as a ward to the Duke of Northumberland, Henry Percy - ensuring that not only would Northumberland now manage the estates of Gloucester until he came of age and that Richard would likely see action on the Borders when the time came, but that he would also be separated from his longtime childhood playmate Anne Neville, the second daughter of the Earl of Warwick and sister of his middle brother's wife; something which he feels very much ambivalent about.

    Grey
    LORD THOMAS GREY
    1st EARL OF WINCHESTER

    Born 1453 (14)

    Status:
    Betrothed, to Lady Anne Neville.
    Children: None.
    Heir: Richard Grey (born 1457).

    Traits (4):

    +1 Battles.
    +1 Charisma.
    +1 Wealth.
    +1 Survival.

    BIOGRAPHY:

Lady Elizabeth Woodville, eldest daughter of Sir Richard Woodville and Jacquetta of Luxembourg, married Sir John Grey in 1452. The young knight was heir to Elisabeth Ferrers, the 6th Baroness Ferrers of Groby and a grandson of Thomas Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk; John Grey’s firstborn son would be finally named after him. Grey’s loyalties were staunchly Lancastrian: he rode for Henry VI on the outbreak of the war triggered by the bloody rivalry between Richard Plantagenet and Edmund Beaufort. Alas, he died on the Second Battle of Saint Albans, predeceasing his mother, the baroness. He left two sons by his wife, Elizabeth: Thomas and Richard Grey, who stood to inherit the barony of Ferrers of Groby. Their fortunes were to change drastically when Edward IV fell in love and married their mother, Woodville. In 1466, after the birth of their first half-sibling, Elizabeth of York, and through his mother’s assiduous endeavours, Thomas Grey was created Earl of Winchester by the Yorkist king.

The King personally brokered his marriage with Anne Neville, co-heiress, along her elder sister Isabel, of the fabulous fortune once belonging to Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury. Such an advantageous marriage placed him among the wealthiest and most powerful noblemen in England. Surely, such a fast and unexpected promotion would arouse suspicions and jealousy all over the realm.

Thomas himself is a rather mild-tempered teenager, particularly prudent, patient and well-mannered. Orphan at young age and raised to high fortunes while still a mere boy, he is rather melancholic and introverted. He completely idolizes his guardian, the King himself, Edward of March, who he considers a fatherly figure of sorts. Grey is somewhat learned, being moderately fluid in Latin, Greek, arithmetic, astronomy and philosophy.

The Woodville's influence in court has greatly expanded due to Elizabeth's secret marriage to the King, of which Anthony was one of the formal witnesses.

    Name: Alexander (Sanders) Bening.
    Age: 27

Alexander Bening, resident of both Ghent and Bruges is a painter of illuminated manuscripts. He has recently been trying for membership into the Ghent painter’s guild but before receiving a reply he accepted an invitation to the English court to attend the Queen herself. What she wanted of this up and comer is as of yet unknown, but Sanders was not one to miss an opportunity.

Different from others of his profession, Sanders is a gregarious and extroverted individual. He is just as likely to be found in a tavern brawl as bent over his latest work, but he still takes great pride in his skill and what he produces. Recently married to Kathelijn van der Goes, she has not yet accompanied him to England and Sanders will surely enjoy this freedom while it lasts.

    "Father John Hastings"

    Age: 59

John Hastings is a thin and ragged man - with wiry grey hair. He loves alcohol and women and is well known for being crude, vulgar and crass.

Once a well thought of young priest, Hastings slipped into a life of depravity after several personal tragedies - that's the official line taken. More likely he slipped into debauchery after gaining some real power in the Church.

    HENRY TUDOR
2nd Earl of Richmond, 2nd Earl of Pembroke

    Born 1456 (15).

Status: Married to Lady Anne Holland.
    Children: None.
Titles: 2nd Earl of Richmond, 2nd Earl of Pembroke.
Seat: Richmond Castle, Pembroke Castle and Margaret Beaufort's numerous properties.

    Traits (5):
    +2 Wealth
    +2 Charisma
    +1 Survival

    BIOGRAPHY:
    The
Tudors were relatively obscure and unimportant until Owen Tudor found himself in bed with a widow: coincidentally, the widow was Catherine of Valois, mother of Henry VI and wife of the English Mars, Henry V. She fathered several children by the Welshman, including Edmund, the eldest, and Jasper, who were uterine brothers to Henry of Lancaster. Around 1442 Henry VI, childless and lacking relations, acknowledged his half-brothers and both were ennobled: Edmund was created Earl of Richmond (a prestigious title formerly held by the Dukes of Brittany and more recently by John, duke of Bedford) and Jasper Earl of Pembroke. Willing to tie his living relatives closer, Henry VI married his distant cousin, Margaret Beaufort (who before Edward of Westminster’s birth was once considered his heir by the Commons) to Edmund, furthermore she was the 1st Duke of Somerset only heir, which made her an incredibly wealthy heiress.

However, in 1456, Edmund died prematurely, of bubonic plague, while he was prisoner of Richard of York during the first stages of the War of the Roses. He left a very young widow, Margaret, pregnant of six months: three months later she delivered a boy called after the king, Henry. A very thin, aquiline-nosed, charming and bright child he grows under the tutelage of Jasper Tudor, his paternal uncle. The Earl of Pembroke was dispossessed of his titles in 1462, after the battle of Towton, and had to flee, unfortunately bereft of his tutor Margaret herself took the reins and assumed the regency of Richmond and all the Tudor lands. With the death of Henry Beaufort, Duke of Somerset and Marquis of Dorset without a son, remained the issue of who would inherit whatever lands the family could retain. Finally, in 1464, both Somersetshire and Dorsetshire were granted to Kent and Exeter by royal writ, but in turn Henry Tudor was installed as Earl of Pembroke, instead of Herbert who had occupied the castle and held the title since 1462. In 1471 he married Lady Anne Holland, eldest daughter of the Duke of Exeter and his wife, Anne of York, sister to the King Edward IV.
