I very much recommend the Wars of the Roses book series by Conn Iggulden to anyone who hasn't read it, it is one of the best I've ever read. He tries to make a very realistic and historical dramatization of the War of the Roses, which I like very much.

You know the Pale is a royal domain though right? Figured you would be among the more semi-autonomous areas rather than where royal authority is the thickest and strongest.

I've read it too, it's very well written. Currently goes up to not long after Towton, incidentally.

And haven't English Invasions of Ireland been over since the time of Edward III? I don't recall any English-Irish conflicts beyond his time or before.

Yeah, but there are undoubtedly unhappy and unlanded Irish clannads who lost lands during these invasions.

If you look at it from a sterotypical point of view, picking a fight with a bunch of drunken, angry Irishmen seems like a bad idea in my opinion. Considering how many times the Irish has rebelled throughout the years against the English, it was in fact, in hindsight, a bad idea.

It was a bad idea, we got our own back in the end, but the English never really did listen to reason.

I can't find any sort of Anglo-Irish conflicts since the time of the Norman Invasion nor anytime before Edward III. It seems that after the Black Death though, royal authority was nonexistent allowing Norman-Irish families holding English-controlled land to become more independent and intertwined with the Irish. Although two families were opposite sides though.

Why not go for one of those Norman-Irish families, Skylord? Choose the winning side and hope to gain more lands and what not.

The conflicts only really got nasty when Protestantism V's Catholicism got into it

I believe Xion is looking at playing them though.
I'm looking at playing FitzGerald or Butler at the moment, along with something in Wales or the Midlands.

You and Lucius are right in terms of there being nothing major until O'Neill's rebellion and the Flight of.Earls, but the Pale was a marches and there was pretty constabt skirnishing if I remember correctly.

I might do that, the Norman Irish lords became more Irish than the Irish themselves, you wouldn't hold a huge amount of love for England.

I'm rather ignorant of the setting and of English history.

What House would you recommend to me? Nothing too big, though. One or two recommendations per side, ideally.

Tudors are relatively small now. Only Henry who is in minority and Jasper, Earl of Pembroke. Most English houses in Wales are small too.

Sorry for the holdup on the military rules everybody. Ponti had conjured up a new formula for calculating combat between two forces and I was going to use it (adapt it) for use in the Roll20 system I've been developing (will be like a wargame). However his computer crashed and is in the shop, and I didn't write down that formula anywhere so now it's lost until Ponti's PC comes back.

IN THE MEANWHILE, I'm happy to give you all a viewing link into what's been posted so far. Note that it's all going to be a first draft (ie, v1.0) that will need testing and hopefully some gutting to make it simpler, though I'd argue it currently looks a lot more complex than it is (the section is just densely written). https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...it?usp=sharing

    @Skylord
There's actually no difference between medieval Englishmen and Westerosi. The only difference is one's preconceived notions (ie, prejudice, by definition) of who they are. Anyways, pretty sure you'll be able to play an Irish mercenary leader if you like. Gallowglasses are on the foreign unit list for now; we had Kerns too, but I saw no viable use of them as a seperate unit, so merged them with Galloglasses.

ALSO, Skylord, I'll just say it. Can you not turn this into an Irish rebellion game?

    Thanks L!

Isn't the Yorkist side a little light on Houses?

Should be lighter. Thieves and scoundrels.

It is, but the two main Yorkist houses (Neville and Plantagenet) were the two most powerful in England at the time, so that should compensate for it a bit.

I'm gonna come out and say it right away, I want House Mowbray, Dukes of Norfolk. I've been eyeing them since the game was up for a vote. The White Rose shall prevail, for York! For Edward IV!
