    ...\tools\unpacker\ReadMe.txt

NOTE: Due to a timestamp check, the following unpacked files will
cause the game to crash and must be deleted before the game is
    launched:

    data\descr_geography_new.txt
    data\descr_geography_new.db
    war never changes

If your patch is downloaded it might be a bad one.

If you don't know what unpack means, you don't need to worry about the two files. That's not your problem. Don't unpack unless you want to learn to mod.
    Now what's the real problem?

Any one of them will ctd. The errors will not show up in the log either. Sometimes you have to realize this game is bugged, autoresolve, and go on.

Look, I have patched my game up to 1.5 (including Kingdoms 1.4) and there are no mods in the picture, but I can't get Kingdoms to work. Every time i start a battle, I get the unspecified error.
I have updated my drivers and installed the game and patches correctly.

Please help me, 'cause I have no idea what to do now. I have read through all posts here, and
just can't figure out how to get Kingdoms to work.

(Medieval 2 works fine I think. I don't see any problems in it yet)

Hey everyone i fixed my problem phew!

Problem was: Was working fine, then after i had closed the game & come back & opened it, got an unexpected error etc etc during the loadin screen at the start.

    Solution: removed 2 descr_geography_new.txt files & 2 descr_geography_new.db files from

    C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\americas\data

    &

    C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\mods\british_isles\data

and put them in seperate folders on my desktop, one called backup america and another called backup british isles

so far i can play with full force again.....if not, will let you know

OH!!! and to get those files to appear, i had to unpack everything in C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\tools\unpacker

just doubles click everything in there

it takes a lil while but from my experience, it is worth it

    good luck!

josh2603: you unpacked the games which isn't necessary unless you plan to do modifications.
And you forgot to read the ReadMe file in the unpacker directory that tells you to delete these files to avoid crashes.

so i've reinstalled this P.O.S. game three times and i've only seen the launcher, every time i load the game i get the unspecified error. i just respeced my whole computer to play this game, its the only program on my pc. i bought the "GOLD EDITION" with all the expansions included if that matters. patches don't work because apparently the "GOLD EDITION" has all these patches already. so any help would be cool, or at least an explanation from the crack staff at sega.

If you own the Gold Edition, did you just put in the discs all the way from disc 1 of Medieval2 through Kingdoms disc 2?
If you did, and no other installing or modifying, you would have installed in order Medieval2 version 1.00, version 1.02, version 1.03, Kingdoms. Any thing else is guaranteed to ruin your day.

The launcher has proven to be bad at times. In the Medieval2 icon, rght-click it, click properties, in the target box, delete launcher.exe and replace it with medieval2.exe. That one I know works because I use it.

If you still get the error message post your computer specs and the system.log.txt.
