Thread: Question about devastation

    Default Question about devastation

    I just started playing as Backtria, after 2-3 turn there is a lot of devastion in Marakanda costing me around 900 gold a turn.

    I killed all the rebel in the region but the devastation is not going away. Is it permanent or does it take a really long time to dissapear?

    Are there any rebels outside your borders? They can cause devastation even across the borders.

    A really annoying feature. As soon as you are able, go hunt neighboring rebel stacks.
    Devastation causes a lot of economic damage - unrealistically so, since most of the time the enemy is outside your province.

    Yes the others regions around are filled with rebels,

    Thanks for the input

    You can imagine that even if the main army is in the neighbouring province, they're still sending out foraging parties to loot and pillage the surroundings.

    Yes. I love this feature. Plays right into descriptions (for Makedonia) of the barbarians to the north sending raiding parties across the borders and being a constant threat. Beautiful stuff!

    Doesn't add up. Devastation can ruin a province. Usually it's around half the income if the enemy is in a different province, but it can be more. That could only be explained with full scale raiding deep within the country, not minor border looting.

    It should be much easier to recover. Right now it is almost impossible to control and the effects can be brutal.

    I wonder, is it adjustable?

    For what I know, these are the values you might want to alter to get the results you want:

    In descr_settlement_mechanics.xml:
    Code:
    <factor name="SIF_DEVASTATION">
             <pip_modifier value="3.0"/>
             <castle_modifier value="1.0"/>
             <pip_min value="0"/>
             <pip_max value="1200"/>
          </factor>
    Lowering the modifiers decrease devastation levels that affect settlement income. Pip_max is the monetary cap that devastation can reach in settlement.

    In descr_campaign_db.xml:
    Code:
    <army_devastation_modifier float="1.0"/> <!-- num devastated tiles modifier for field armies -->
    Haven't played with this value, but seems quite straightforward. Zero value likely disables devastation. What values between zero and one do, I can't say.

    Oh wait... So what you are saying is that there's devastation even from armies that are not in your province? :O

    I wonder if there are other factors besides enemy armies that devastation is meant to represent, based on character traits or buildings or I don't know what. I feel like I've seen devastation in settlements that are surrounded by my own and no enemy armies in sight. If so, things like that might need to be taken into consideration.

    You didn't notice? I spent the day clearing mobile rebel stacks from provinces I don't even want to take now, just so my land could breathe

    I think forcing the player to hunt down almost a stack sized rebel armies from far away provinces to escape a crippling devastation punishment is a bad mechanic. There always was small border raids between settlements but I doubt their effects were anywhere close to what the state could gather as taxes there, plus these raids shouldn't be thought of a one sided thing considering a region has more than 1 or 2 settlements in it.

    I propose either decreasing the inter regional devastation to a very minimal value so the player can ignore it on whim or fight a large battle (the rebel stacks we currently have will do imho) to remove it completely.

    As far as I understand it, not possible, devastation is a hardcoded mechanic in it's operation. The bigger the stack is, the larger it's devastation radius, province boundaries have no impact whatsoever on that.

    That's because I spent too much time blobbing up, not even touching those rebels on my own turf. So some provinces had (for a short while) a negative income because of the devastation escalation.

    Dont think this is save compatible.

    My game crashed twice while loading.

    Luckily I was only a few turns in so started a new campaign.
