Fall of the Samurai Hero of the Empire/Shogunate

In Fall of the Samurai, there are these two achievements, Hero of the Empire and Hero of the Shogunate, that require the player to win on Legendary difficulty with the respective non DLC clans. If the player declares a republic or changes allegiance, do he or she still get the achievement? From the title I would assume not, but the description only says you have to win the campaign. I'm just wondering because normally I prefer starting a republic over the Vanguard option but I also want the achievement.

To get the achievement you need to stay loyal to the respective allegiance. I remember vaguely a Legendary independent republic run that gave me nothing. It definitely makes for a more interesting campaign.
