    Default The Merchant of Venice

This is a new type of AAR that Ive been working on. It involves focusing specifically on the activities of one merchant (or maybe more?) in the campaign (where he has traded, how his faction's situation has influences him etc.).
Besides from the fact that the name would be a pun on the Shakespeare play/now a movie, Venice seemed close enough to several good trading resources.
    Part 1 coming tomorrow!

    Cheers,
    Selenius.

So will you be reporting on everything that happens in his country, or solely anything that happens to this one, single merchant?

    At last, heres part 1:

    The Merchant of Venice

Venice's first merchant recruit, Tusco Delogu. Having grown up in Venice, the trade capital of Europe, Tusco found it easy to choose his career of choice. He has started off at the age of 30, the age which most choose to start their trading careers.

Tusco began trading textiles in 1080, and managed to earn 14 florins on his first shift.

During the same year, the leaders of Venice convened and decided to send the faction heir out into Zagrebian territory to extend the Venician kingdom. He was successful in this venture.

After 4 years of trading textiles, Tusco made plans to 'aquire' a wandering Milanese merchant's goods, and managed to succeed without getting caught by the authorities.

It was thanks partially to him that Venice achieved the status of Richest Faction.

Guido Batlle, Venice's only diplomat, was sent to initiate talks with the Papacy. An Alliance was formed, with trade rights and map information being given both ways.
Subsequently, Venice's Papal standing went up to unprecedented levels.

Back with Tusco, and since his successful aquisition, he chose to go into Bavarian territory, trading on the silver mines.

However, the leaders decided that someone else needed to support Tusco. And so, a merchant, Jacobo De Vela, was recruited in Venice's Cretan settlement. He chose timber as his trade of choice; however, he would have to wait before gaining as much success as Tusco.

Deciding to use their good papal standing to their advantage, the Doge (leader) called on Pope Gregory to announce a crusade on Antioch. His holiness agreed to this proposal, calling on the other Catholic factions to join.

Another merchant was recruited in the meantime, this time in Zagreb. The new merchants name was Marino Barbarigo, and some called him mercantile genius, who, in time, would become the greatest in the world.

The Doge (leader) decided to personally take responsibility of the Crusade to Antioch, undertaking the trip along with the Count (heir).

In Part 2, we found out whether the crusade is successful, and what trading opportunities this new conquest might bring!

That's a pretty cool idea you had, very creative.

The problem is that I don't see it going far (now he is trading this, now he is trading that... now he acquired this...). But good luck, I think it can be interesting if you make it interesting!

Glad to hear it. Seems like my merchants survive one attempt, then get overthrown the next time a foreign merchant comes over.

    Part 2...

The Merchant of Venice - Part 2

The Doge and Count of Venice prepare to leave for the Crusade to Antioch, a mystical city in the holyland that is bound to offer increased trade opportunities for Venice. It is for this reason that two merchants, Jacobo de Vela (on Crete) and Marino Barbarigo (in Venice), are sent off with the crusading force.

Meanwhile, back with our original merchant of Venice, Tusco Delogu. He chose to stay behind instead of joining the crusade, preferring the lush markets of Europe to the dusty valleys of trade in the holy land.

Milan, Venice's neighbouring Italian rivals, sent (literally) a horde of merchants out into Europe. It was Tusco's fortune (or misfortune ) that half of them went past Venice. And so started his aquisitions.. or his attempted aquisitions:

    Fail...

    And again...

The latter was with a 74% chance. It was this remarkable failure that caused him a trait decrease, limiting him to a level 1 finance.

Third time lucky? Yes. At last, he was successful!

Back with the crusade, and the force finally arrived in Antioch. The resources that awaited the two merchants included spices, sugar and sulphur.

With the crusade being successful, the values of the resources went up.

In part 3, we see what adventures await the merchants in Antioch. Plus, Tusco goes on an aquisition streak!
