    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War"

I can get as far as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE, there is no Sega file.

    You're getting the error message:
    "Login failed - invalid CD-key"

Right this is how to resolve (with thanks to various posters)
You cannot change the cd-key ingame anymore (most likely for the protection against illegal games), so you have to do other things.

    Open Start
    Click Run
    Type: regedit
Now go to this: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War"

Now you'll see a value representing the CD-key. Change it to what it should be. You could have done the following wrong:
    -Don't type spaces
    -Do type the "-"s
    -Don't use "o"s use "0"s
-Type everything (except for the numbers obviously) in capital letters

Now it should work, if it doesn't let us now ... preferably in the MP part
Sorry for being noobish, but i cant find Sega on my Hkey local machine...but i did find it in the local user. But there is no field for a CD key or anything like that.

I bought MTW2 trough STEAM. When i check regedit i do what the guides tell me and find the MTW2 folder... NO, I DON'T SEE ANY VALUES FOR CDKEY OR VALUES THAT ARE REPRESENTING ANYTHING! All i see is (Standard) which don't have any values. So can anyone help me?

Seems like good advice, but when I went to this "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War" I got stuck because there was no SEGA folder.I am sure this is very wierd.

(I have windows 7 if that makes any difference to anyone)

Gad I HATE cd-keys! I always loose them. I'm getting the same error message as everyone else. Never tried online. Tought I'd give it a try. Well no luck for me.. Why would the game be installed in the first place if the cd-key was incorect?

If you do this accordingly, it will work.

In case you still have problems, make a clean reinstall of M2TW and patch it with 1.2 and 1.3 after. If you have gold edition nothing is needed. Type in CDkey with capital letters and 0 instead of o. Thats the most important part. CD key is 100% case sensitive.
Reinstall? Loose current campaign? Oh noes! Well. Guess I'l try it. Tried following the recipe for sucsess with no luck.

It says Cd-key. Press it. Doesn't matter if you lost it seeing as it will be saved there. Write it down.

Simply save your 'save' folder somewhere and copy it back after re-install.

    Thanks Oides!
    Saved me there

I'm having the same issue. I have Vista and I can follow the path in the registry editor to rhe Medieval 2 folder, but there's no line for a cd key, only one that says: (Default), REG_SZ, (value not set). For the name, type, and data fileds respectivly. I also bought it on Steam, and I am not seeing a cd key anywhere.

How can I get a cd-key field to show up (create it I assume?) and how do I get my cd-key from steam?

Just reinstall the game. It'll save you a lot of time.

Awesome! That is what I needed to know - and I was able to correct my CD key thanks to you, Oides - saved me from having to spend a long time reinstalling

I did what was told here, and was very careful about my typing, but it did not work until i tried putting the - between the sets of 4, then everything was fine
