Im pretty sure it's in an INI file in the install directory.

And from what others have told me, you need to enter your key in using capitals or it wont work.

EG you cant put abcd-defg you need to put in ABCD-DEFG

I had the same problem, watch relly good the letters in the cd key are all massed up and not clear i mean in the game box, reinstall and with Capitals letters. in my event i put an 8 insted of a B so take a good look before entering any letter or a nubmer.

hey if this happens to anyone simply do what TOTALWAR told us...

    You're getting the error message:
    "Login failed - invalid CD-key"

Right this is how to resolve (with thanks to various posters)
You cannot change the cd-key ingame anymore (most likely for the protection against illegal games), so you have to do other things.

    Open Start
    Click Run
    Type: regedit
Now go to this: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War"

Now you'll see a value representing the CD-key. Change it to what it should be. You could have done the following wrong:
    -Don't type spaces
    -Do type the "-"s
    -Don't use "o"s use "0"s
-Type everything (except for the numbers obviously) in capital letters

Now it should work, if it doesn't let us now ... preferably in the MP part
Please give me reputation points thank you

Seems like good advice, but when I went to this "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/SEGA/Medieval II Total War" I got stuck because there was no SEGA folder.I am sure this is very wierd.

(I have windows 7 if that makes any difference to anyone)

Still doesn't work for me. Tried all you said. It's still being problematic.

Well I installed the 1.01 patch and I can't logon now. Just it says failed to log on. Damn. It was fine for 2 days and now problems raise again.

I'm having the same problem. I checked the registry and the key is entered in properly. I sent 6 emails to Sega and never received any return emails. I even went back to where I purchased the game, Gamestop, and no help.

I have checked the registry as well. It doesn't work fo rme and I knew where the cd-key was as well. Ironically it worked before the patch. NOw it doesn't because I don't have to use a fixed-exe just to play the game (the patch fixed that, but has now broken multiplayer AFAIK)

Well, noones posted here for a while, so I am reviving the thread...

I STILL GET THE MESSAGE "INVALID CD KEY" etc.. I have done all the regedit stuff...

Would this be to do with having patch 1.2? (m2tw)?

    Extremely unlikely.

This will sound extremely pedantic, but are you 100% sure that the CD-KEY is entered correctly in the registery (common mistakes include Os for 0s, Ls for Is etc)
