Thread: Next total war game?

  1. #1

    Default Next total war game?

Have CA announced anywhere what their plans are for the total war series? I know warhammer is the 1st part of a trilogy of warhammer titles but are their plans either

1 - release warhammer titles annually for the next 2 years
2 - release warhammer and historical titles alternately every year
3 - release both a warhammer and a historical title for each of the next 2 years

    Anyone know?

as much as im enjoying warhammer as a refreshing change I definitely still prefer historical titles.

All know there is a BIG historical game in development. We assume it will be the next release but we don't know when or when the WH's are coming out.

if they follow the same pattern we will get like half dozen "culture packs" and than 2-3 small campaigns and than stand alone budget game (kinda like attila to rome 2 as barbarian invasions were to first rome tw) and new game in 2018 mostly likely Medieval 3 total war
Common sense removed due being Disruptive.

Who knows, but it'll be funny if the Sieges are the same or taken out entirely for the next game. Too much work to make it like 10 years ago man.

The Warhammer series last I checked is separate from the historical total war but for obvious reasons they'll probably alternate so they don't overlap with each other in regards to sales.

I think they'll take out the small campaigns for warhammer, I mean it'd be cool but they already have too many awesome things to make.

My guess is that we'll see a historical total war announced in 3 months and come out in a little over a year, I hope this will be completely independent of the warhammer releases, but in all likelihood they won't release the second warhammer installment for 2 years. I mean the game's been out for 4 days and i'm already dying to get the next two games!!!

If the sales of TW Warhammer is high enough they should focus on the 2nd and 3rd Warhammer to offer them fast because the people will consider them more as an add on and not a new game.
to much time between the Warhammer titles is not good idea and i think faction dlcs won't make the people accept long waiting for the next tw warhammer.

I mean factions are either you like them or you don't like them you don't buy a dlc of a faction you don't like to play.

If tw warhammer isn't selling good, well then they should work an a historical one additionaly but
I doubt that people who buy tw warhammer and "original" tw will buy both if they are offerd at almost the same time...

If it's not extended TW:W games, it's definitely gotta be Medieval first, and then Empire following that. My guess would Medieval, another Warhammer, then Empire? I'm dying for Medieval TW, that's the first total war I played.

    2018 Total War: Warhammer 2
    2020 Total War: Warhammer 3
(they announced their will be 3 warhammer games coming in this total war series)
(maybe the years arent correct, but their will be 3 games for the warhammer franchise).

They also announced several times there will NOT be a third installment of medieval, rome, and shogun.

My gues, is they gonna try World War 1 or World War 2.
Why? wel look at it: they now have flying units in it.
World War 1 is immense popular for games, check several indie games and the BIG hype for Battlefield 1.
Its also a mistery, cause not many people know much of WO1 (at least, not the big crowds).

Total War Arena is next most propably. Was already in closed beta (and was pretty damn fun), has been offline for few months to speed up development based on the feedback, but once the WH hype goes down a bit, it hopefully will hit back online later this year.

This might be a little off topic, but if we're speculating what a future TW game might look like...

I'm hopeful that they might branch out a little. I doubt this would ever happen, but my personal favorite idea for a new Total War game would be something like Total War: Victoria, set predominantly in the 19th century. Imagine starting with the Congress of Vienna in 1814 and going through the next century of history, perhaps until the Treaty of Paris in 1919. Take part in the colonization of Africa and the American west, the rise of socialism, the formation of Germany and Italy as nations. Or play as a developing nation, trying to westernize without upsetting your people and culture, much as the Chinese and Ottomans attempted to do. Imagine going from muskets and cannons to bolt actions and machine guns in a single play through, developing that huge tech tree, gaining access to electricity, rail roads, automobiles, and radios. It would be even more ambitious in scale than Empire, but if done right would be something new and interesting, instead of another rehash of the same old melee mechanics and map conquest.

Sidenote: Yes I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the Paradox Victoria games, but I would love to see it all laid out on a map at my fingertips instead of abstracted through graphs and RNG based battles.

Given that Empire was the last ambitious game campaign-wise and they neglected to fix it, I doubt they'll try anything so complex as depicting the shift from Napoleonic squares to Trench warfare. Indeed God help us if they try WW1 off the back of the popularity of next battlefield. Planes and tanks might be cool in theory but how on earth they'd make an ai capable of trench warfare is a difficult question.

Hoping for pike and shot, Italian wars/Thirty Years War, but think China will be their next target if they don't pour all their resources into Warhammer

Highly doubt it. Having full guns will completely change the gameplay and will need full rework, heck it might not even be Total War, it would just be a shooter. It seems the Warhammer trilogies are set it place and since they took on Warhammer, I don't think CA has the time to develop a brand new game. If anything and as mentioned in my previous post, they most likely will/need to release a new Medieval TW followed by Empire TW.

I think that pike and shot total war would be perfect.
1500-1650 or such could be the timespan.

An age of exploration, early colonisation, and it is the most diverse period of history in regards to weapons and armor. Swords, axes, halberds, pikes, zweihanders, shields, arquebuses, muskets, pistols, crossbows, bows, grenades, cannons, trebuchets.. plate elaborate plate armors, light armor, heavy knights.. I would really like to see a full total war game of this instead of just as an afterthought in a medieval game.

America would already be discovered at the start and open for conquest, it would also allow for meso-american civilisations to be playable. By stealing ships or hiring mercenary ships they could also make their way to the old world.

The playable faction list could certainly be quite unique. Scotland and England where still seperate, Denmark was pretty big, Burgundy was a mayor player in western europe, the Holy Roman Empire was still a thing, the Teutonic Order was also still around and could, like the Aztecs, make for a very challenging campaign since both where on the brink of destruction. The italian city states where also in great form at the time, and also powerfull but small factions that make for a difficult start.

If there'd be 12 playable factions at the start which seems about the highest they tend to go with, they could go with:
    -Spain.
    -France.
    -England.
    -Burgundy.
    -Holy Roman Empire.
    -Ottoman empire.
    -Egypt.
    -Denmark.
    -Poland.
    -Aztecs.
    -Venice.
    -Muscovy.

That would offer a nice variety of large and small factions with different cultures, and a few small but influential factions in different locations who can offer a very challenging campaign.

For DLC I'd put high priority on Portugal, Scotland, Teutonic Order, Lithuania, Hungary and more Italian city states and more meso american civilisations.

Historically speaking, in the age of Exploration/discovery and colonization, Portugal is the first choice between the playable factions, whatever they are.
