    Default Re: Satrapy of Macedonia

A man speaking an Ionian dialect from Halicarnassus rode into Pella with two horses, appearing weathered even though he had cleaned and groomed himself before seeking out the Regent of Alexander's legacy. To the satrapal government's surprise, the man was in the employ of a satrap beyond the Zagros Mountains, a land that just some decades ago would have been considered strange and mythical.

He pulled out a letter for the Regent, pulled from his saddle bags, and passed it upwards, awaiting.
The letter read in Koine Greek, but written in the name of a Persian..

"Regent and Lord of all Asia,

Word has spread to us, Mithradates of Persis, that Roxana has given birth to a healthy daughter, which is a joyous occasion and so we wish upon her and Alexander's daughter many honors and fine days. This however means that Philip is now Philip the Third, king of Makedonia.

    [the letter continues amiably until..]

We would seek to ensure that this new king and his regent are reminded that they do not rule only Hellenes and Makedonians, but many, many people, of many backgrounds and families and beliefs. This is, unfortunately to say, regardless of whether it is wanted.

To ensure that Alexander's empire stays together, a united Asia and Hellas, we humbly put forward the following proposal:
Hagen, regent of Philip III and protector of royal Makedonia, is offered a bride, from amongst the sisters of Mithradates; Philip III, long may he reign, is also offered a bride from amongst the sisters of Mithradates. This may become a bridge between two ancient lands, Makedonia and Persis, which both have existed as the bulwarks and cores of ancient kingdoms for many centuries.

    [more niceties]"

The letter is sealed with an eastern-style symbol of a falcon, surrounded by the Greek characters for "Mithradates I"

OOC: I wrote a response to your post on my thread.
Also I wanted to remind you that because you will most likely be occupied with the Greeks, is it wise that you have not given yourself any family members? Or is there a way for you to get generals in some other way?

[for a very similiar situation, see Atropates]

A month later, the same Ionian diplomat returns to Pella, visibly more exhausted then last time he appeared, with a beard hanging scraggly from his chin. Still, however, he insists on approaching the Makedonian government in his finest, clean robes.

The response he carries is thus:

    "Hagen of Makedonia,

The Regent is wise to see the truth of his situation. Mithradates presents to you three sisters: Corasma, who is 17 this year; Parmida, who is 15 this year; and Artystyna, who is 13 this year. We will not describe the virtuous princesses as though they were raised in a brothel, however. Corasma is the eldest and wisest of the daughters of Phrataphernes, and we would wed her to the Regent.

We offer you not only a wife of noble Iranian* lineage; We offer you a lasting alliance between our houses, that will transcend other loyalties. Oaths will be sworn, our swords will be pledged to alliance, and we will drink
haoma to it. You will have assured friends in the east, and we will have assured friends in the west."

Again, the letter was sealed with a Persian falcon, bearing its wing aloft, surrounded by the name of the seal's owner.

    * - That should say something like "Ariyan" or "Airiyan" etc., but I just couldn't bring myself to write that

After a short voyage Phoibe sister of Herakles the satrap of Phrygia and daughter of the now deceased but famed general Antiochos Lefkos arrives to her homeland in Pella.
Covered in a long cloak she is followed by some of her servants as her two bodyguards guide her towards the palace in Pella.

Phiobe and her retinue are brought into the royal palace in Pella with much pomp and ceremony. In the reception room they find Hagen, cradling small baby with a foreign woman close at hand watching him intently. Ah! He bellows as she comes into view. Welcome back to Pella mylady, you must be descended from Aphrodite herself - for I've never seen a woman half so fair as you in all my days. He stated with a smile. I hope the journey wasn't too rough on your delicate constitution. He lifted the baby girl up gently. This is Alexandra. The true born spawn of Alexander the great, is she not a perfect child?

Phoibe is noticeably basking in all the attention and blushes. She is very quiet, probably because she is so shy. But is noticeably taken with the child and rubs its face.
"Yes my lord, the child is very pretty. She reminds me of my brother's little girl"
She then went to pay her respects to Roxana. And returned next to Hagen.
"Honestly lord I am glad to be back in Pella, I remember when I was a small child I lived here with my mother and it was not until my father and brothers went to fight in the east did I leave Pella. Unfortunately my mother died soon after and I had to stay with my father in Sardis where he died not long ago. Then my brothers came back from Persis and I stayed with them in Phrygia... Phrygia was a dreadful place full of strange things. Do forgive me, I speak far too much sometimes."

That tireless Ionian made a third trip to Pella, informing the satrap that Artystyna of Persis was now travelling the Royal Road to Skudra and to Makedonia.

A month later, a procession of Persians arrived in Pella. Scores of horsemen led the way, surrounding a sizable litter dyed in crimson and gold carried by servants. The escort made its way to the palace in the Makedonian capital.

Worry not, you are home. He smiled even as he thought. A chatty woman.. she'll need some work, but she has a pretty face and should bring children. You'll make for a good wife I'm certain, the daughter of Antiochos Lefkos must have some of his stunning intellect. Not that you'll make much use of it in my service. He handed the young baby to its mother, and dismissed the two and the throne room filled with courtiers with a flick of his hand. Once the room was emptied his mirth lessoned and was replaced with a more serious, even authoritative tone. Your brother has given me your hand, I will see us wed within the month. You will learn the manner and position of a wife, and I will learn that of a husband. He leaned back into his seat. Does this seem acceptable? He didn't care to much about her thoughts on the matter, but she was given a chance to answer all the same.

They are brought through the city and up to the entrance of the capital, the center of the universe as far as any Macedonian was concerned. They were greeted by the regent himself, Hagen, perched upon a high throne. Wearing the ring of Alexander and the skin of a lion. Welcome, to Pella! He bellowed down upon his newest guests. It must be a quire thing coming so far from home. He remarked. Tell me how does it feel to have the shoe on the other foot?

    Phoibe smiled and nodded.
She then handed Hagen something wrapped in a nice cloth.

"This is the seal of Megas Alexandros. My brother told me to bring it to you so that you may use it as the regent. If you so require it he can have one of his artisans make any changes to it, including inscribing your own name into it."

He smiled. I must thank your brother. He replied happily, getting the inclination that Phoibe was a passive creature - the makings of a good wife. Or my brother to be, I suppose.. soon enough. He looked over her body, nodding to himself. I shall set you up with accommodations within the palace until we are to be wed my lady.

The noble diplomat at the head of the party bowed his head in greeting, only offering limited obeisance.
The man seemed to avoid the pointed question, and gestured to the litter, which was set down upon the ground as they spoke.

    "Honorable Hagen,"
he began in accented Greek, "may we present to you, the lady Artystyna.."
As if on cue, servants pulled back the thick curtains of the sedan room, revealing a padded and luxurious interior.
Out stepped, slowly and cautiously, a small figure no taller than a grown man's shoulders, swathed in red and gold and teal.

She stepped forward until she stood beside the diplomat; though her face was behind dangling jewels and coin-like ornaments which hung in strands from the headdress sitting her head, one could see her lips and the skin beneath it all. Soft skin, untouched by the sun, little lips, a small nose, but her eyes seemed almost entirely hidden behind the headdress.

"... sister of the satrap, Mithradates."

An Egyptian messenger arrives at the royal palace in Pella with an important letter bearing Calas' seal.

    Letter to Hagen

    Hail Regent of the Empire,

I have written this letter to let you know of my intentions to make war with the neighboring Greek city state of Kyrene. They have forsaken their vows to the Empire and it is my intention to return them into the fold with force if need be. I seek your endorsement of this mission and I also seek to ask of you about our navy. I command a mighty fleet in Egypt, but many of our esteemed companions have decided to leave the waters alone. I ask that you appoint me as Navarch of the empire so I can attempt to bring together an Imperial fleet to do the bidding of the empire. Any satraps or allies would send ships or money to build them so that the Empire can be as fearsome on sea as it is on land. Let me know of your answers as soon as possible my regent.

After a long journey a Macedonian rider approaches the gates of Pella, he carries a letter with him and brings it to the regent of the Macedonian Empire, Hagen.

    To Hagen,

Hail Hagen, regent of the Macedonian empire, may the gods bless you and your family.

I have written this letter to ask permission from the regent to unify the lands of Mesopotamia, as there can be no divided Egypt or a divided Macedon, i feel there can be no divided Mespotamia either, therefore i ask permission from the regent to unify those lands, if permission is given i will do everything to achieve this throughout peaceful methods without a single shed of blood be wasted. Only if nothing else is possible to make an union then swords shall be yielded if you give permission.

And on another subject, would you be interested in an official alliance through an alliance? If you have any unmarried female relatives left then i would be interested in marrying one of my sons to her, this to cement our alliance forever and to tie an union between the two most important cities in this empire, Babylon and Pella.

    Signed, Antiochus, Satrap of Babylon.

I am struck by your great beauty my lady. Hagen spoke, his words laced with jest. By the simple fact that he could not see her face. He made his way down the steps to Artystyna. Extending his hand as to take hers and place a kiss upon it. I am Hagen regent of Alexander's Empire, I trust your trip here was uneventful?

The Persian nobleman, the young lady, and the entire party looks momentarily flustered. Unsure of how to proceed.
They let it go, deciding not to oppose Hagen's direct interaction with the young unmarried noblewoman.

The leader turned to the young girl, translating into Ariian for her, his voice nearly a whisper and his head tilted in respect to her.
There's a long a moment where she doesn't speak, simply staring back at the Yauna who deigned to kiss her hand, her little grey eyes visible behind the beads.

Then she speaks, her voice soft but determined. Another silence as the interpreter considers her words.
The girl's look didn't waver as her quip was translated, albeit poorly, into Greek.

"Skudra is so remarkable, that the thousands of cities along the Royal Road seem so dull."
The sarcasm was lost in the escort's dry translation, and likely much of the quip's sting, but the bite and wit of the statement could be seen in Artystyna's eyes.

She added to it, smiling as she did so.
The noble looked concerned now, converting to Greek after much deliberation, obeying his madame.
"Lady Artastuna loves sheep herds, great lord."

After news of the death of the Satrap of Marakanda, a messenger is sent to Pella from Baktra.

To Hagen the Aegeus, regent of the empire,

With the demise of the Kshaçapāva of Marakanda, it appears the land has descended into anarchy due to his lack of an heir. I write to request your permission to pacify the lands of Marakanda to ensure no threats to the empire arise from this tragic event, or the nomads to the north that Alexandros defeated at Jaxartes take advantage of this to seek revenge for their past defeat.
