Yeah, don't worry. I always look at modern illustrations of stuff very skeptically. I like Ian Heath's illustrations because he usually links his stuff to some good sources not usually dispersed on the internet.

@Slytacular I am assuming you're doing Almohads since you asked for information on North Africa. Anyways here are some very amazing mod resources you could use to make their units, this is Al Mansur pack in Mount and Blade Warband https://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php?topic=193272.0, and this is Hispania 1200 mod http://www.moddb.com/mods/hispania-1200. Yeah, I'm very familiar with Al_Mansur and his stuff! I've also played Hispania Mod 1200 as well. I think some of Al_Mansur's stuff is already rigged for use. However, I might update the textures on Al_Mansur's helmets once the other Iberian factions are worked on.
