Default (Submod) Roman Icons, Numeri and Foederatii clothing, and staring Army names

    Hello,

I am a major fan of Fall of the Eagles, really love the troop dispositions, barracks layout, and much more. One thing I did want to improve on are the unit icons for the Eastern and Western Romans. I used FotE models as the basis for each shot, so all of the images are authentic FotE representations.

    Here's a representation.

I also have a small mod representing the change from legions as army sized units, to field armies as the naming representation. Problems are, I cannot find where new Roman army names are located (can only mod existing ones), requiring manually renaming. If anyone knows where those are, I would be very grateful!

Odd, as I cannot seem to edit my above post...

Here's a link to the standalone version should non-steam users like to try.

Thank you for bringing these new changes, just two littile problems:
Lacked icon for Brachiati Iuniores (or Armigeri Defensores? BTW, I don't know why Brachiati Iuniores using Armigeri Defensores' shield in FotE.).
Some soldiers of Romanized Numeri and Romanized Foederati Lanciarii miss their arms' textures.

And new army names are located in "region_groups.loc" ...

Very good idea with the names, hope you get those new army names done!

Thanks everyone! Good to know about the minimum posts Dresden, thanks! And thanks again for fixing my first post!

CROWNROBIN, I am beginning to think that Brachiati Iuniores and Brachiati Seniores are something that was not really intended for the game, but left into the custom battle area (on purpose or by mistake, I am not sure). I think that the Seniores use another graphic as they are covered, but the Iuniores use something that I just honestly cannot find! I looked even for Armigeri Defensores, as that is what is in the Roman Land Units Text area, but they do not appear in the Campaign. From what I have read they are a particular unit from Auxilia Palatina in the East, but FotE is representing force groups vs. individual regiments. I did look for Iuniores in my early tests, but got frustrated when I could not find their graphic base (made an icon and everything, just no idea how to implement it), but in retrospect now, they don't seem to fit in with FotE... Strange...

I think I am near to tracking down the issue with the arms, missed them in my checks as they are only for a certain few of the men wearing short sleeved striped tops (some work, some don't, just have to trial and error to discover which ones don't work and what I did to make them not work, hopefully tonight I will get it sorted).

Thanks for the location for the part of the legionary names! That will be really helpful. Now I just need to find where they put 'Legio' as I would like to change it to Comes or Comitatus.

Updated! Steam and Google Drive versions now have fixed Numeri and Foederati Lancerii arms (something about short striped tops that caused the issue, just changed them to long striped tops).

I also found where Legio was located, so that has been changed to Comitatus (along with Comes in all scenarios).

I have yet to really wrap my head around the 'names' of the new armies, as old legionary names do not make sense for names of armies, and it doesn't seem to apply names to regions when recruiting (at least in all instances, some names appear anywhere). Will try and figure out what to do about that...

Dude, you did an amazing job. Truly thank you. FoTE stock roman unit icons were not to my liking (just my opinion) but these ones are exactly what I wanted. Hope they make them stock with your permission.

Hey man, if you need ideas for army names, check this site out: http://lukeuedasarson.com/NotitiaPatterns.html

It's an awesome site that makes the Notitia Dignatatum really accessible

Thanks d35966n, I use that site regularly. The issue I am running into is the naming of new Armies is not based on geographic location (as the Dignatatum hints at), and the game will not have that option. Some names seem to be regional, others are not. I would be hesitant to have ERE Armies with 'Comitus Hispania' as a name (as I cannot guarantee that the ERE or WRE uses a particular name). Some seem to be connected to location, so have to just decide as to what I am going to do for those that are not... At present, they just kept the old legionary names.

I am working on an update for this mod, modded the Roman Rebel Army names to be in Latin, as well as having a few revised icons.

Interesting, good work. Did you also change the general's titles? Or where do they come from in the game? I never played as the Romans and also never fought against them till now, so I did not look that much in game. Will change. A question, was Stilicho really named magister peditum a time? I thought he was comes and then magister militum or utriusque militiae?

Do you plan on expanding this mod to other factions as well? The unit cards really look amazing

Updated! Revised sword-infantry to have a completely different pose/pov. Spears cleaned up a bit. Skirmishers and Missile infantry all have very new poses (Archers, Slingers, Crossbows have action poses).

I am thinking about working on the Germans next, given it is a big bang for the buck there (given how much their icons are shared between factions).

I didn't check this yet but at my opinion better solution will be throw inside mod really and historic name for late roman army from Notitia Dignitatum. Legion infantry never existe inside legion with name since augustian troops for example Legio Augusta, Legio Gemina they are anachronics name...

As far as I understand MajorTom that's what he plans, replacing the notations of the stacks as legions with the names of military leaders. So for example instead of "Legio I Italica" you have "Magister Militum Praesentalis I" or "Comes Africae". BTW there were still most of the old-named legions in our timeframe, f.e. Legio I Italica, based at Novas, or Legio II Augusta, based in England. That were Limitanei legions, and as their comitatenses equivalent and unlike their brighter days namesakes must have been rather small, of course. Impressive on paper, not in reality.
