An open letter to Besim
As you may or may not have already gathered its Belisarius here, sort of posting in TWC. I never thought I’d have to do anything like this but I guess times change. I ask Besim to please read what I have to say and possibly contact me at (email@example.com) if he would like to talk to me in more depth. This will be my first and only post using this account and is specifically directed at Ogres.net. I must say that for the most part I am happy to see Ogres.net finally upgrading the site. Credit to Besim and Ogres.net for years of support and I would like to make it clear that this is not a post against Besim or any member of the current administration. It would be in the benefit of the wider community for the anti ON sentiment to die once and for all.
Besim, I never had the pleasure of really talking to you and getting to know you so I should first explain who I am. The account’ “Belisarius” was a member of staff for over a year and I personally took charge of content with my good friend Justinian. Many modders and modding teams can back me up when I say that I offered them front page exposure and the odd interview whenever time allowed and thus my work was of benefit to the modding community and thus Ogres.net. Like you, Besim, I worked on a voluntary basis and was never paid or rewarded for my work and neither were the other members of staff. The site was a place where I could express my creativity, which is something I think we might have in common. People work for the site because of their love of the total war series. However the site doesn’t experience this amount of traffic all the time. Once the hype of MTW dies down the two main attractions will be the common community and the modding community. I appreciate your support in keeping the modders reward system. However I see no reason to remove Senatorii and Divus, I see no benefit to the site and Ogres.net by removing an integral time honoured tradition.
Besim, as a former member of staff who worked for free I would think that the least Ogres.net could do for me and my fellow ex staff members is issue us our traditional Ranks of Senatorii and Divus. It’s like any business organization, the rewards such as employee of the month are worthless but they motivate the team. I fear that without the ranks the motivation and morale within the moderating and administrative ranks would be lost. Everyone is selfish to an extent and I fear that the removal of said ranks will make working for the site less attractive. That said also note that this could result in an increased workload on Ogres.net memebrs such as yourself with less voluntary members would consume a large amount of time, thus You will have less time which could be spent investing in other profitable areas. The way I see it is that ON have nothing to loose by keeping the ranks.
Second point is one regarding the Curia and the Staff fights which resulted in me leaving the site. Besim, if you regard this as a Staff versus Curia deal then I was clearly on Archer’s side and thus can offer you a different opinion. I must say that it was the staff that was to blame for the fight and a lack of communication between various factions who did things in different ways. To blame the spectators would be unfair as only one or two members who were “curial” took a major part in the fight. I was admin through the worst of it when Archer was at work and Justinian was at school and I have a very good understanding of what happened. If it is Ogres.net’s wish to not have elected moderators then that is fine, but couldn’t the ranks of Senatorii, Divus and so on replace moderating elections? Surely there is a better compromise then the current? Besim, the problems resulting in the odd drama are lack of communication and if you wish to prevent it you must delegate work and host open dialogue with staff. Remember, without the staff your workload would be huge.
These are my main issues. I hope that it will be possible for TWC to once again host mods and function as the best Ogres.net site. Total War Center is the best because it is different and it is its differences which make life complicated but incredibly entertaining. Yes I know people should get a life, but as we all know many people want an escape from real life too.
Again, I am just an email away if you wish to contact me.
Thank you for your time.
Former global moderator, content writer/deputy head of content, pro curator and Senatorii.
