The use of stars for the civitate logo seems confusing. From what I've seen so far the number of stars for any civitate is the same - its purely the default graphical representation of the fact that they are a civitate - however the use of the graphic with faded out stars seems to imply that the star rating is variable...
I've not seen any actual variation in number of stars for any civitate so assume that the implication is just a misinterpretation of the graphic - which other people are probably also confused by....

The rank determines the number of stars - civitate and artifex are equal to three stars, whereas patrician is equal to five.
Its just supposed to make it easier to understand the ranks, so the 'hierarchy' shown graphically by stars.
Spiff, if the civitate logo had just the three 'active' stars and not the faded out ones then it would probably read that way,
but with present version it looks as though a good / bad civitate could have more / less than the prescribed three active stars out of five, which I think is not actually the case, as I agree with you that its just the graphical representation......
And artifex doesn't currently actually relate to star system at all.....
Yep. Got to agree with that. Not that it was really hard to figure out that the rating was not variable, but my first reaction was it probably was (more akin to the reputation thingie).
As for improving the clarity of graphical representation compared to the old style, I would suggest to give both a banner in the same colour scheme, but with differing symbols. I think that would do most justice to the fact that both ranks are above all equivalent, even if they are awarded for different contributions.
At the very least, we need to reduce the max number of stars to 2 or 3, because the 4th, 2nd and 1st stars are neglected. That won't do. I do agree about the potential confusion of the '3 star civie' thing... I thought I was only mediocre the first day I saw it... I was about to change my title to "Mr. Mediocre." I was so excited!

Lord Rahl (who has designed most previous TWC banners) has also proposed these alternatives to the current set of Curial ranks:

I like them as they remind me of the old school set, but it has to be said the more visual aspect of the current set has its advantages.
