Ditto on Felix and Gotrek. They encounter/battle pretty much everything in the Old World, with extra attention given to Skaven. It's been a long time since I've read it (maybe 10 years), but by Skavenslayer, Gotrek & Felix encounter one of their primary nemeses, a Skaven "Grey Seer," Thanquol. There are many many chapters from Grey Seer Thanquol's perspective, which provide great insight on Skaven culture, technology, and warfare.

Riders of the Dead was always my favourite, although I didn't read much Fantasy. Warhammer or not, it was a really captivating and intelligent story. There was an accompanying short story called Shyi-zar which came out in a mini-book bundled with a White Dwarf years ago, which was also really cool. Not about Orcs, but those are the stories I rate most highly.

If you want to travel all around the Warhammer world, Gotrek and Felix series does that. Huge number of books, varying in quality.
Ulrika the Vampire trilogy was surprisingly interesting, though with a clumsy finale.
I can't think of anything about Orks specifically, nothing good anyway.
The best stuff on Orks is in the older Armybooks, in my humble opinion. Orks just don't lend themselves well to a compelling novel. They are always better in the bite-sized lore snippets.
I am largely unimpressed with Warhammer novels. The Mark of Chaos is one of the worst books I have ever read in the fantasy genre. That being said the Blackhearts series is a hidden gem in the rough of mediocre Warhammer novels. I also quite enjoyed the Gotrek & Felix books. The first couple of books because they really portrayed the sense of being an adventurer in a vast gritty world and the later books because of a strong cast of supporting characters. Between the two I'd recommend Blackhearts as the superior work but Gotrek and Felix is more famous and has many more books in the series.
the sundering is great!
It's not surprising that you didn't think Mark of Chaos wasn't that good, it was based off of the story for the rts/rtt game Warhammer: Mark of Chaos. Adaptations of games into books are rarely good, just see the Dawn of War books by C.S. Goto. Gotrek and Felix are really where it's at but I would like to pick up the Vampire Wars series it looks pretty interesting.
Has anyone read the end times books? None of my friends are into warhammer so I have literally no one to discuss them with![]()
