Hegemony 3 Clash of the Ancients .......Wow. What an addictive game! I've been looking for an alternative to the Total War games for a while now and played a little of its predecessor, Hegemony Rome, early access. It had great potential which I'm happy to see is being realised in H3. Unlike the recent TW titles this game has a refreshing simplicity of concept and mechanics but at the same time a great depth in game play, empire development, unit specialization etc. It has nice differences in cosmetics between the 5 or so different cultures. It has NO painful turn times as it's all real time with pause as needed. It has a map editor which is infinitely easier to use than the broken one with Attila TW. It has the whisper of DLC with more cultures like Carthage or Epirus. All in all its a tone of fun now and will keep on getting better. Already there are a number of nice mods including a total conversion that adds factions like Persia, Troy, Macedon, Assyria, Sparta, Franks, Crete, Carthage etc. Great developers who engage readily with the gaming community and even post weekly modding tutorials show the dedication and customer focus of the company. 9/10 for me! Can't wait for their further updates and DLC. And currently on sale on Steam. Bargain !

I have played it in a few hours, I enjoy it, but I HATE sea pirates/sea raiders they are the most annoying thing ever in this game.

But it is the best title in the serie.

Can almost be certified as a grand (RT) strategy. But ultimately it's an action/arcade RTS á la Age of Empires, just with a bigger map and cities et al. It's needs more depth in diplomacy and city management. Battles are adequate enough but that is i n need of more elaboration & detail as well if they are going to keep this simplistic non-battle systems.
I do love the whole logistics part, an extremely important aspect the TW compeltely fails to model correctly but the game can't live on that forever.

All in all, the game is fun, good, but still needs "more" of pretty much everything to be become a true grand strategy and when that happens I can safely say it'd be WAY better than any TW game. Heck that'd be sort of an evolution of the TW games if they can realize all the potential of this game. But it's wishful thinking - it's an indie studio that had to crowd fund the game in the first place, and this one is clearly the best in the series, doesn't even get much attention at all.

So TW is still king...of meaningless focus on graphics, arcade mechanics, TOTAL neglect of simulating real logistics, recruitment, city management etc etc-

It's 75% cheaper on Steam's Autumn sale now. The pictures of unit cards on https://www.hegemony3.com/ makes me think of unit cards for Rome Total War or Europa Barbarorum 2 for Medieval 2. It seems to be a bit of a Paradox kind of game, but much simpler. Haven't played Hegemony 3 yet, but sure going to try it now when it's on sale.
