As promised by the King, half of the original 4,000 troops were deployed to Nablus. These were troops mostly from the Crusade of 1101 who had braved the sands and battlefield of Mersivan to come to Jerusalem and the service of the King. Julien felt that these poor souls could use the guidance of the Cardinal in order to feel more fulfilled by the oaths they had kept this past crusade.
