Oops, I don't why I said he was from North Carolina, but Knight was actually from Jones County, Mississippi. My bad. Apparently, after the war he also led a regiment of black soldiers to defend the area from Ku Klux Klan activity and is also credited with establishing the first mixed-race community in the state.
