Thread: My dreamworld map

    Default My dreamworld map

A Dymaxian map would end the x y axis issue of flat maps. Any thoughts on getting map heights lined up in GIMP? One could sail anywhere. Some huge land masses might have a few regions while others many in a tight land mass. Some area excised as unrealistic based on time period. I think it makes it fun for exploring with the fog of war blackness turned on as we all expect the NSEW MAP.

I have often desired to do an alternative world CIV 3 mod with nearly all slave settlements, 1-2 settlements for 12 kingdoms (configurable by separate campaigns), and see how the map changes. Then shadow factions for those 12 possible when they get stronger and empire building.

A third of the map removed easily on the far x boundaries.Removing Australia (for that happened much later) removes a 1/4.

It's an AoR mod. Tech building changes units for no yew trees for England if in Brazil.

This map demonstrates the remarkable feat by Spanish conquest due to incredible distances.

It doesn't add any more land mass than uanime's wonderful ERAs Empire mod, but suddenly circumnavigating is more realistic. This makes a similar path to the New World by the Vikings, Spanish, French possible while Chinese exploration by Admiral Zheng He is also possible.

Or the extraordnary Joseon Admiral Yi Sun-sin

Do you have a height map for such a projection? Also what happened to the bearing strait in the second image?

No height map yet. I presume I must build the map by continents piece-meal, and then carefully add layers of regions once I rotate the continents. The Berring would have to be edited due to that rotation. The New World rotation is plausible but needs tweeking as Iceland was the reason very early Viking exploration was possible until ice and the mini-Ice Age screwed that route. Not rotating the New World increases total x length quite a bit adding a ton of ocean.

Truly a Dymaxian map would be revolutionary in a mod while accurate, typically more accurate for proper land mass surface area. Note the total size of Indonesia versus what is proportionally illustrated in ERAS Conquest or Falcom. Italy is much smaller than Japan too.

I'd rather try it in a sub-mod using an existing map but rebuilding regions. But someday make a totally new map as a resource to the community. Then anyone could adapt the regions or their sizes.

The scale is too big for the game to allow anything but the most basic, and possibly exaggerated heights. If not applied careful this may prove detrimental to battles as the height different between individual tiles could be extreme.

A settlement the size of Ireland looks a bit weird, too.

You also have a lot of area that is ocean, and uninhabited areas. You could surely rotate your Americas around so that it lines up vertically with Afroeurasia, and do the same with the South East Asian islands. You'd then have a squarer map and there'd be plenty of room still to sail (in fact at the distances you currently have I can't see an AI Spain, for example, sailing all the way to South America without some heavy scripting).

    Something like this, perhaps?

Wow Iceland's near the Bering Strait!

I complete get and love the idea of a very accurate map of a country and seeing a historically correct battlefield versus a gigunda world map. Truthfully, maybe replicating a world map is nonsense but make an entirely new reasonably sized map, adapting from the most interesting map heights on the and placing them.

Then having a designated mix of opponents with different campaigns even though not close to each other historically.

I think what might suit you would be a set up with 'provincial' campaigns if you would like to showcase a variety of map areas. If you are not familiar with it: all campaigns use the basic files but each have their own campaign folder complete with map.

If you want to go for the 'civ' style set up then a fantasy map will be much more suitable - the AI is simply not suited to handle a map with large sea areas and multiple landmasses. The 'Alexandros' map of mine might give you an idea on how to separate continents\landmasses and still have a coherent AI behavior. Sadly the 'Japan' map is unsuitable without heavy scripting.

    .................

Both can be found in my collection.

You could largely do it with diverse microclimates in a Britannia-sized reconfigured map but superfast elimination would likely result ruining the experience. A reconfigured Pro Deo et Rege map is large enough, map height diverse enough, climate diverse etc. It's making multiple randomized land masses vs. the Earth.

Maybe very sheltered home settlements surrounded by mountains, thick forests, and pinchpoints.
