Default Please help with Map Scrolling CTD

    Map-Scrolling CTD.

Can anyone help me with a Map-Scrolling CTD?

I have built a new mod with a map 510x510 pixels. (largest possible)
It is a conversion of my previous mod which had a map of 510x256px.
Which never had map-scrolling errors despite one region stretching the full map-width of 510 pixels.

The CTD seems usually (although not always) when scrolling over large regions.
I have fastidiously checked and matched coastlines in map-regions, groundtypes, heights.

    Any suggestions anybody?

If some of your regions are absurdly large, then yes, CTDs or, a little less severe, graphics glitches may occur. There is little you can do about it but splitting huge regions into smaller ones.

Yes some of my regions are enormous. A 'northern tribes' in particular.
The puzzling thing is that my previous mod with a larger region(full 510pixels across) on a 510x256px map had no such problems.

    Thanks for your reply.
Any idea what is largest 'non-absurd' size?

I do not know and I think there are more factors contributing, hence your other mod working fine.

This is a screenshot from my working mod. Note there a quite large, but not enormous regions in the corners of the map (arabia, northern africa, the baltics). I'm sure they are not near the maximum size, though.

This is a screenshot from when it was work-in-progress. There were graphics glitches of the kind described in this glorious TWC Wiki page. Note the enormous region located in modern day Russia and Ukraine. Later, when I cut those into several regions, all glitches vanished.

The grey/brown Russia/Scandinavia bit is going to be waaaaay too large for one region, and possibly also the blue/purple 'Americas'? bits

    Thx for your reply.
The map is oriented NW-to-SE so I think you mean the Desert Tribes (couldn't get America in :-)).
The orientation is dictated by the diagonal of a square having more space than a side. :-)

Everyone says that the Northern region in my new mod is too large.
I just can't understand why in my previous mod I had no problems with a region stretching the full width. (510 pixels)
(at bottom and including a triangular 'land' which was needed cos otherwise there was too much sea.

Strangely, in my new mod, I don't get scrolling CTD if I have no rivers.
But even with only the Scandinavian rivers I get scrolling CTD eventually, in Southern China only.

I shall try cutting up 'the north', cos I know sometimes there are knock-on consequences.
    Thx again.

I have been advised I need to ask advice of Gigantus on this. I am not sure how to contact him. I am not very good at using TWC.

Using the max size of map is asking for a lot of problems - the scroll crash is one of them. In 1648 we had to remove most 'normal' rivers and replace them with navigable rivers, if we had known about it earlier we would have used a smaller scale. To test it simply replace your map_features file with a completely black one.

Having large areas of forest or high mountains will do the same.

twc seems to have eaten my first reply attempt.

    thanks Gigantus.
Having no rivers reduces but does not eliminate map scrolling error.
I have bot yet done detailed editing so there may be marge areas of forest and hgh mountain.
Do you mean forest-sparse, forest dense or both?

In my previous mod I had all rivers underlain by fertile, and forests and mountains much bisected.
Which may exlain why I didnt hit problems.

Rivers, forests (both types) and high mountains have 3D elements which put a large strain on the outdated game engine which is already struggling with the over sized map. The forest on top is animated which is about as bad as stress comes.

    Hmmm, interesting.

    1. Do you know if it is possible to disable the 3D elements in forests and high mountains?
    And would it help?
    2. Are the 'bumps' provided on hill terrain also 3D elements?
    3. Could rivers somehow be made non 3D?

    1. No
    2. Only the 'tops' in high mountains are 3D
    3. No

An obvious question now strikes me.

What is the largest map size which you (or any thread-reader) know of which is free of the map-scrolling error.

I know I can get 510x256 cos have done it myself.
But for revising down my mod shall need more, 510x320 thru 510-380.

Do you know if any mods have managed this kind of size without the map-scrolling error?

In my experience you will have a good chance to encounter this problem once both measurements exceed 480

Thanks Gigantus, that is much appreciated.

I am about to try 510x350.
    Hopefully that should be ok.
