Thread: Windows 10 Issues with Rome Total War and Roma Surrectum - Possible Solutions

It seems to be working with the AA off. Graphically it's not always too stable now, as it will always give me a 0.5s black screen before loading and when going into battle. Further, when scrolling around the map it looks a bit fuzzy.
But it will do for now.
    Thanks!

My windows 7 system had the same problem, RS2 not working after the security update 3086255 so I uninstalled it and now RS2 works fine again. Just saying.

Thinking of going back to Win 7, same as everyone else I'm having the Win 10 issues. I'm looking at the preferences.txt, where do I put the "-ne" text? Thanks.

You will still encounter this problem if you revert to Windows 7, unless you choose not to install the automatic Windows update KB3086255.

Hmmmm, never had a problem with Win 7, maybe I didn't get that update.

Looks like Microsoft is removing the Securom Support in Windows 7 and Windows 8, 8.1

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086255

So we will lose the ability to play it on these platforms as well.

Yes! The thing still doesn't work though. Run as adminstrator makes the error disappear but the game still does not load.

Does anyone know if any work is being done by the RS team to fix this issue?

What could they possibly do? This issue affects the entire game, not just one mod. It is the responsibility of Creative Assembly to solve the problem.

Well, I bought the $9.99 Steam vanilla version & it plays fine but I have the AA turned off to get it to play, so it doesn't look that great. Still need to know where to add the "-ne" text in the preferences. A different question, does anyone know if I can install the RS mod onto the Steam game?

My issues stem from the fact that I have the CD version of the game that dates back to 2004 when the game was released. It is my understanding that a lot of people have this version still.

So far I have not been able to get the game to work with windows 10. I have tried all the solutions offered but none worked. At a certain point I checked my computers event logs and noticed so odd errors whenever I would load up Rome Total War.

    <SNIP>

Problem 3: Nothing works, I cannot load up Rome Total War or Roma Surrectum
Solution: Do not update to Windows 10 and stay on either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
I took a second computer and installed Windows 8.1 on it as a alternative.

This thread will expand and hopefully provide all solutions to playing RTW and Roma Surrectum on Windows 10.

    Update 2:
Looks like Microsoft is removing SecuROM and SafeDisc support from Windows 7, Windows 8, 8.1
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3086255

I am working on some solutions

Uninstalling Windows update KB3086255 seems to fix the issue.
In addition disabling some services works as well.
Will post some steps once I fully test

    Great... .

    Thank You
Thanks CenturyX et co. What a bummer. I am uncomfortable to try something like suggested in the "possible solution" above, so just a quick post to wish you guys luck in solving the DRM conundrum I hope!

Or, I will just need to buy this again from Steam. Not a problem. RS II / III is worth double that for sure.

Would someone be willing to try this on a Win7 or 8 machine and see if it works? It's a batch file that (theoretically) will start Secdrv, launch RTW.exe, and then after you close the game you should hit 'Enter' and the batch file will stop the Secdrv service.

I couldn't upload a '.bat' file. So once you download this. Put it in your RS2 folder with the other RS2 batch files (where the exe's are) and then change the file extension from .txt to .bat. Then run the file. This is for CD version of RTW only.

Uninstalling Windows update KB3086255 will fix the issue on a windows 7, 8, 8.1 systems. Then go to windows update and hide the update, this will keep it from installing on your system. windows 10 is another issue. I still use my 2004 CD of RTW. :Note, Creative Assembly and Microsoft are not that interested in fixing an old game as this. (just saying)

    "crap"

Oh well. Rome wasn't build in a day and all that. I am willing to sit this out until a solution is found.

If there are methods to resolve the issue in a manner not to discuss in this forum, please give me a pointer...

This is only for Steam versions of RTW in Windows 10 (it doesn't fix RS2, unfortunately):

Fix for Rome 1 / BI / Alexander and Windows 10
    June 21 - al Qamar
Hi guys great news, someone at TWC has found the solution for the problem that none of the Rome games will start on Windows 10 preview.
Kudos to him! His solution however went too far beyond the problem as I found out tracking the real issue down based on his solution.

Kudos and credits for this solution:
    HazardHawk > http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197995706862

    Affected games:
    Rome 1 (Gold) / Rome 1 Barbarian Invasion / Rome 1 Alexander

    Why does it happen:
The game has issues if the preferences.txt contains a resolution that has a dfifferent resolution set for campaign map / strategy map than your windows resolution.

In addition the game fails to create the preferences.txt at all if it does not exist.

    Solution:

    For Rome 1:
This will autosolve the issue for BI even though they are located in different directorys (magic)
    1. Check your Steam directory
    e.g. c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Gold

    2. if not exist create the directory preferences, process with 3.
If the preferences folder exists continue with 4.

    3. download a preferences.txt from my clouddrive
http://1drv.ms/1GfQFGQ and copy it to your installation folder e.g. c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Gold\preferences
WARNING: this will obviously delete your graphics and game settings except key bindings.

    4. if the preferences.txt exist open it with notepad or similar and adjust the resolution to meet your windows resolution

    STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
    BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080

these values must correspond with your Windows resolution*!

    For Rome 1 Alexander:
This will autosolve the issue for BI even though they are located in different directorys (magic)
    1. Check your Steam directory
    e.g. c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Alexander

    2. if not exist create the directory preferences, process with 3.
If the preferences folder exists continue with 4.

    3. download a preferences.txt from my clouddrive
http://1drv.ms/1GfQFGQ and copy it to your installation folder e.g. c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rome Total War Alexander\preferences

    4. if the preferences.txt exist open it with notepad or similar and adjust the resolution to meet your windows resolution

    STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
    BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080

*If unsure check it in Windows 10:
Click on Notification Center > Settings > System > Screen > advanced settings

    Cheers,

Hi, my RTW on windows 7 doesn't work, this is my error message. "CRC total war/ data/sounds/ music. dat doesn't match in the file in the setups cab file. may be corrupted contact software vender".
I just uninstalled RTW, and reinstalled it. We had work done on our computer lately.
But now its dead, no loading or nothing. What can we do? We miss RS2!
