Default Who is your favorite barbarian faction?

Who is your favorite barbarian faction and why? both playable and non-playable. Either in terms of playing as the faction or because of the history of that faction.

I would have to say my favorite barbarian faction is Galatia, i like playing as them and i also like their history. Gauls that are a long way from home, surrounded by Hellenic and Eastern factions/tribes and in the game the only Celtic/Gallic faction that's somewhat close is Tylis so it makes for a fun campaign.

same. Galatia is great. Your starting position is though (but has really nice regions), and your units are awesome

It's kind of like with Massilia only in reverse, a Hellenic/Greek faction surrounded by barbarians.

But yes Galatia is great, they have awesome units and although the starting position makes things a bit difficult that's what makes it fun, so challenging since there are potential enemies on all sides and the only nearby friend(Tylis) is too far away to help.

Odryssians because I'm living in the same place as them. I know it's stupid but I discovered that I have a tingling sensation every time I see them in the game, esp. if Macedon or someone doesn't wipe the floor with them at the very beginning. And if you think their units are , check them out in Rome 1. With them was my hardest campaign in the game. Also Germans/Getae/Scytho-Sarmatians. The Celts don't appeal to me for some reason, except Galatia. The Ardiaei I find to be the blandest possible faction, just as the Illyrians IRL. Overall I don't care about a faction's units at all, but I rather choose based on my personal biases or if I find the faction interesting in real life history. Cause in the end every faction possesses units that are capable of wining a campaign, sooner or later.

Celtici would be my choice. A stack of Iberian Swordsmen is insane in the early campaign after "fire at will" was added.

Beating Lusitani before it rises is challenging in the early stage too. After the 1st province is under control, you are free to decide whether go north to conquer the Iberia or go all the way south to wipe out the Africans.

Odryssians. I love how they're at the crossroads between the Hellenic, Celtic, Eastern and Steppe worlds. Plus they have a unique though limited roster (then again, most of the Vanilla rosters are pretty limited). I'm also a fan of the Iceni, pretty much only because I'm British.

DEC, the Ardiaei are tremendous fun. Sure, their roster is limited, a single really lame cavalry, the bare minimum in missile units, but they have two of the truly interesting units in the Raiders & Marines & a navy that's better than most of the "civilized" factions. Most importantly, you have to play them differently than all the other Barbarians. Raiding is a great moneymaker (with the new patch addition) & a really interesting diplomatic tool (Raiding a faction with a huge number of enemies gives you the ol' "enemy of my enemy is my...." benefit without having to declare war. The Raiders are the best armored of any of the guerrilla units in the game. A neat trick with a guerrilla in a siege is being able to start the siege ladders much closer to the walls in an area where you place no other soldiers. Leave the ladders unmanned & then place the Raiders close by. When the battle begins & if the enemy has not garrisoned that area, you can rush the unit to the ladders & forward to the walls without attracting any attention.

Well, as boring as they sound i kinda like the nomads too. It gets boring after a while just spamming nothing but horse archers and sometimes spear/lance cavalry but boy is it fun when playing in battles as the nomads! i remember playing as Massagetae and running into Baktria as i was expanding south, of course this was early game so i only had 2 full stacks plus another one building back home while Baktria had at LEAST 2 full stacks roaming around. They were at war with Aria but didn't seem to care about them and instead decided that i was an easier target so they attack me at Amul.....they sieged Amul with one army and sent the other to attack my 2nd army, i had no choice but to fight because they would simply just take Amul and destroy my army if i retreat so i had to fight this 2nd army of theirs, i didn't have an advantage to auto-resolve so i had to play it. Turns out i'm pretty good with cavalry archer tactics, i lost half my army to their ranged units as well as to their hoplites who managed to catch some of my cavalry units but in the end using hit and run tactics i managed to defeat them, then next turn i attacked their other army which was now alone in Merv, after that i proceeded to start steamrolling their 2 provinces.

Spamming cavalry archers can get boring.....but it works XD

I really like the Roxolani faction. Their elite lancers get a charge bonus of something like 86 even stock, with proper buildings and upgrades it goes up to 110+. They are also very well armored which helps a lot against enemy missile troops which are pretty common in that side of the world.

You can basically break whole armies in one charge and trample everyone into the dust lol.

Iceni. In the AIO mod that I play I find their units better then the other British tribes. The main appeal is having all of your "core" regions on an island, which is less like like to be invaded. On the other hand, you'll have to establish a firm foothold on the mainland and get your better troops from overseas (from your more developed settlements).

Getae. I love their style of fighting (heavy emphasis on missile troops) and their heavy skirmishers are strong enough to fight in the line if need be. Their falxmen can be very decisive if you know when to use them and of course...they have horse archers. I'll never get over CA erroneously making the Bastarnae into copy/paste Celts in the Grand Campaign so they are always my first target.

A close #2 would be Royal Scythia. I'm totally fascinated by the culture of the Scytho-Sarmatians and I mark out every time I travel in Eastern Romania/Moldova and see Scythian kurgans in fields. Of course, I live and die by the horse archer.
