Id say you definitely located the problem there Century. No Windows 10 for me anytime soon, then.
Glad you now have it working again!

I just change the launch code when I swap from vanilla to mods, but I think I've seen reference on some forums to a Steam launcher that maybe can do it in a more efficient manner - never looked into it though.

I sticked a thread in the RS forum.

Here you all go.
Official Response from Microsoft.
To sum up the article. The old school DRM that was present in the games of old like Rome total War can introduce loop holes into the computer and make it easier for hacks to happen. Looks like we are screwed
I hate it that I was right.

That's what I suspected. Does CA have anything to say on this yet? Hopefully they'll get around to issuing a patch...
Thanks for the update, Century.

Nevermind, already found a solution.

EDIT: Alright, forget about it. I found a solution. Though forum rules won't allow me to tell you, what I did.
I hate to do some necromancy.
But here it is, I finally, after some 7 years, bought a shiny new PC and now RTW isn't running anymore. I tried those solutions in the OP, but nothing works. Literally nothing, I don't get any error message, no new task is created, absolutely nothing.
Game should run in Windows XP compatibility mode, executed as administrator.
I have the RTW Gold edition on DVD,
The game is installed in C:\Games\CA
Does anyone has an idea?

I would rather have a memory that is fair but unfinished than one that goes on to a grievous end.
Disk versions simply seem not to work anymore, regardless of what Windows you're running. There are some workarounds I've read about, but IMO the easiest thing is to get the game on Steam. (You can simply use the CD key to authorize or register the game, so you won't need to pay for it again.)
Thanks. I will do that.

Good luck! If you have trouble activating the game on Steam, let me know. I had to do the same thing for Medieval 2. (With Rome, I just didn't know I could activate my CD key, so ended up buying it again )
Another option is to buy a newer CD (anything that is circa 2007 or after seems to work fine)
Seems that around that time, they produced new executables without the pesky DRM.
My 2007 CD is running fine under Windows 10, and it also worked with Win7 with the security update.
Where can I find my RTW CD Key again?
Dear all,
I have a good computer, play BI on Steam, and have Windows 10 installed. I was unable to launch FATW on 32bits images (although my computer is obviously 32bits). I have understood that to allow playability, I had to put 16bits, which I have done. Even with this, I encounter problems with many crashes on the campaign map.
I have the impression I have read somewhere there is a way to force the use of DirectX 8 (or something like that) for RTW/BI/ALX on Steam and that it solves a number of problems. Does anybody know about this? Or does anybody know a way to solve the kind of problems with Windows 10/Steam/RTW-BI-ALX?
Thank you in advance,
FFJean
PS: if such a solution exists, I think it wuold be great to sticky it!
