Default [PREVIEW] Pax Romana - Roman Factions

This preview does not include units. Separate unit previews will come later as they get completed. These are meant to give historical background on each faction, starting with the different Roman factions.

The Roman Empire in the 3rd century was a very different place than that of Trajan or Augustus. In the time of the 3rd century, the military began to abuse its power to decide who became emperor. From the time of Marcus Aurelius on, plague began to ravage the empire meaning that manpower began to become limited. The legions had more men of mixed barbarian/Roman blood and the use of foederati would increase by the 4th century. The economy fell apart as the constant civil war ravaged the empire. Over 50 men laid claim to the title of Augustus during the period from 200-300 AD. The Sassanids rose in the east, barbarians became more aggressive and organized. Rome nearly disintegrated. The disastrous defeat of Valerian in 260 humiliated Rome and left it without order. It will now be your job to reverse their misfortunes.

    Imperium Romanum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus was born in Etruria during the year of 218 AD. By his coming of age the empire he lived within was in shambles. In 253 AD, his father Valerian became Augustus. He made his son Caesar alongside him. Stability began to return to the empire. But disaster struck in 260 AD. Valerian led a campaign against the Sassanid Persians but due to plague, the army was soundly defeated. Valerian was captured and rumored to have become a footstool for the Persian king Shapur. That left his son as sole ruler of Rome. Problem was, he was an intellectual man and not part of the military elite who had become accustomed to choosing the next emperor. Peace would not last. The infamous 'thirty tyrants' began to spring up. In the west, Postumus revolted, taking all the western provinces with him. In the east, Macrianus led the remnants of Valerian's army back west to fight Gallienus. That is the precarious situation you now find yourself in. Can you save Rome from total collapse? Lead the legions Caesar! Roma victrix!

    Historical Characters

    Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus (Gallienus)
    Lucius Domitius Aurelianus (Aurelian)
Marcus Aurelius Valerius Claudius (Claudius II Gothicus)
    Aureolus
    Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus (Diocletian)
    Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maximianus (Maximian)
Marcus Flavius Valerius Constantius (Constantius Chlorus)

    Imperium Galliarum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Marcus Cassianus Latinius Postumus was a soldier from the beginning. He was likely of Batavian origin, where Hercules became revered. This is believed due Hercules appearing on coins of Postumus. He rose through the ranks to become an Imperial legate, commanding forces in the German provinces. When Valerian was captured and things began to spiral out of control, Postumus took matters into his own hands. In 260 AD, his troops declared him emperor and he established his capital at Augusta Treverorum. He promptly had Gallienus' son Saloninus killed. He took control of Gaul, Britannia, and Hispania. His aim wasn't quite to remove Gallienus, but to forge his own mighty empire. He formed his own Senate and Praetorian Guard. With all these tools, he turned the barbarians back across the Rhine, defeating Franks and Juthungi namely. Power to the east is not necessary, but if Postumus begins to feel ambitious, he certainly could defeat Gallienus. Onward to glory!

    Historical Characters
    Marcus Cassianus Latinius Postumus (Postumus)
    Marcus Piavonius Victorinus (Victorinus)

    Imperium Palmyrenum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Lucius Septimius Odaenathus is the 'king of kings' of Palmyra and a client king of Rome. He is believed to be of Aramaic origin due to his original name of Odainath. Palmyra was given its independence by Emperor Hadrian in 129 AD. Ever since then, it has grown to the point of becoming the richest city in the east due to its prime trade location. The name Septimius suggests that his family was given citizenship during the reign of one of the Severan emperors, likely Caracalla, who declared all males within the empire to be citizens. Odaenathus is a formidable commander, and leads some of the finest cavalry in the world. He had first decided to try and gain the favor of the Persians by sending several gifts to Shapur, but they were rejected. At that point, he decided to side with Rome. It was Odaenathus, alongside Macrianus, who turned back the Persians after Valerian was captured. Since then, he has remained loyal, letting Macrianus lead his ill-fated expedition west. He must keep an eye on the Persians. If his power is fully consolidated and not threatened bu Macrianus, then perhaps he can lead armies to conquer and forge a mighty empire from the ruins of the weakening Rome.

    Historical Characters
    Lucius Septimius Odaenathus
    Zenobia (via wife trait)

    Imperium Macrianorum
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Fulvius Macrianus was a fiscal officer to the emperor Valerian. To be exact, a count of the Imperial treasury. He has been lauded as Valerian's finest commander, but this is most likely an exaggeration. When Valerian was captured in 260, He and Odaenathus defeated the Persians. Not Gallienus. Macrianus and his sons should be the ones to rule Rome. The revolt of Postumus has further weakened Gallienus' position. Macrianus promptly had his sons Quietus and Macrianus Minor declared the rulers of Rome. He himself could not assume it due to the deformities in his legs. He was joined by a Roman commander simply named Ballista aka Callistus. He also still had access to Valerian's treasury, which he had safeguarded. He departed west with his son Macrianus Minor to fight Gallienus. Ballista and Quietus stayed in the east to keep an eye not only on the Persians, but on Odaenathus as well, who has remained loyal despite Gallienus' position. With wealth and soldiers, Macrianus could rule through his sons and have all power!

    Historical Characters
    Fulvius Macrianus
Titus Fulvius Iunius Macrianus (Macrianus Minor)
    Titus Fulvius Iunius Quietus (Quietus)
    Ballista

I really hope this mod isn't dead. It is very promising and the 3rd century crisis is pure Total War material.
