Year of the Four Emperors
Having lost the support of the people and senate of Rome, Emperor Nero committed suicide. He was succeeded by his rival Servius Sulpicius Galba. Earning the enmity of many for his cruelty, Galba's support is very rapidly diminishing as the people start to draw parallels between the rule of Galba and his predecessor.
Even as plots fester in the capital between the Praetorian Guard and disgruntled noblemen, the legions of Germania have refused to swear loyalty to the new Emperor. The veterans of the Germannic Wars have raised their own Emperor, Aulus Vitellius. With Britannia and Gaul, and the legions stationed there, swearing loyalty to this challenger, Galba's hold on the throne is weak.
Furthermore, Hispannia is controlled by one of Galba's oldest supporters. While this should have been a cause for hope, Marcus Salvius Otho has set his eyes on the title of Caesar and would see Galba dead to gain it.
The Danube legions have sworn their loyalty, however to what extent is in question. They do not move from their forts upon the frontier, with whispers coming that they intent to see their own candidate wear the Imperial purple.
Yet what is more worrying is from the East, where Titus Flāvius Vespasiānus and his legions battle the Jewish rebels. Those legions have no reason to support Galba when their loyalty is firmly stuck with their own general.
Year of the Four Emperors, where four men would be named Emperor, one following the other as being proclaimed Caesar. One following the other in to death. At the end, the Flavian dynasty would arise to lead Rome, carrying on from where the Julio-Claudian ended. However, that was what happened in history. History is supposed to repeat itself, yet that does not mean that here it will be the case.
