There is certainly a lot more variety in the missions, and now the story fits the gameplay better. When fighting invading aliens it makes more sense to have an army instead of a small team fighting against it.

And soldiers can look a lot more unique now. At least men had beards to create more variation, but especially women tended to look quite similar in the last x-com game.
With guerilla warfare it also makes more sense to have a larger number of women in the ranks due to what is at stake.

I dont have a judgement yet on the game. I dont know what Im doing wrong, but Im just playng on normal, I am end of May, and the avatar project is already 9/12 bars. Without the one blacksite I assaulted and the codex I killed (and the dark event I stopped that would give them +1); I would basicly have already lost.

The avatar project really sucks, and the game cheated on me this time. The project went up by 3 (!!!) in just one month, although I did a mission to prevent a breakthrough via dark event. Yet the game just ignored it. And I did all the destroy facilities missions asap.

One thing's for certain: next time I'll install a mod that makes this slower.

After finishing my first playthrough I just started my second one. Lost two people on the first mission. Rookies anyways, but personly I always like to see how long that random starting team survives, in the last x-com too. To me the initial four are kind of special.

I did have some luck though because Mac Eliot survived, the only one from my character pool. The Mac from the Predator movie. He's a marksman now though and I am not sure if thats right for him, might make him a grenadier since he did tear down a jungle with a minigun in the movie.

Might do this as well, although the latest facility brought it down by 3 points, and im planning on attacking one that should drop it with 2.

Also, it might be me, but experience gain is slow, even with the GTS upgrade. Im end June now I think, and I still have not reached the highest rank with a soldier. Although maybe on normal there are less enemies around to level up on. But also because of this, its very hard to train a decent backup squad, especially without Exalt around to farm a little.

Not a fan of the timer. The least they could have done was to let the timer only start when you are detected. I brought one lower rank soldier to a vip extraction, she had 3 kills, but I lost her because she was not in the area after the timer reached 0 (at which ppoint i assumed I had one more turn...)

And as a sniper guy I really hate how dead eye is really crap compared to headshot. Dont think there is enough reward in outflanking your enemies and stripping them of cover, very often it remains a 75% hit when they are out in the open

Managed to get it back to 3, now I can really take my time. I'll need it to gear up, got 4 wounded on the last attack. Took me forever, had my sniper knocked out and bleeding, so I had to carry him all the way through. In the end, I also had to carry the mission objective to the evac zone. Took me 30 turns.

Yeah I struggle with the sniper too, It's really a hassle to get him to the right spot. Have him a bit too far and shot % aren't that great, move him and you have to use that bloody pistol. Often you don't have the time/landscape to set him up correctly.

About experience: I shuffle my team around all the time, so I haven't reached the highest ranks either, but on the plus side I have a pretty deep squad I can send into battle without remorse. But at this point I don't train any more recruits.

Anyone bothered with Psionics? I haven't since I always found sth. that I had to prioritize, I doubt it'd be worth it at this point. I find the specialists incredidibly useful at this point.

Psionics are very strong, and you can just keep training them to increase rank instead of in the field. They also have some sort of death beam attack that does high damage to enemies standing in the same line.. I took out three mechs with that once. It can't miss. It does have a 6 turn cooldown.

My snipers tend to be very usefull, I try to find them high ground in stealth usually. Roofs tend to be good to move over to maintain stealth. Unless enemies toss a grenade at you, thats why it tends to be better to let others go off the roof while keeping the snipers behind on the roof. They can really do massive damage there.

One of my snipers was insanely powerfull in the endgame due to an ability that lets him keep firing shots when he kills something with it. And I gave him a superiour stimpack that boosts accuracy, and an extended clip so he had six shots to take.
He once killed four enemies in his turn, clearing out the field. I believe later shots do less damage, but in this case I killed the full health enemy first, and then three with half or less health.

I hope someone will make a WWII mod with the french resistance or SAS Commandos, a modern game like XCOM with historical settings would be great. A Wolfenstein mod could be great too.

Oh man, that's a fantastic idea! Imagine rebuilding the resistance The New Order style, freaking amazing.

That would fit quite well with how XCOM works, starting with human basic technology then using some futuristic stuff later on. There was a game like that "Silent Storm", it's a bit old now.

I got pretty far into it and was doing well. My troops had plasma weapons and I was keeping the Avatar project down to two points. And now I can't play it. I try to launch it from Steam but I keep getting Error 41 messages. Apparently the Steam servers are too busy to process my request. It's been like this for the past couple days. Does anyone else have this problem?

Btw, this is what it feels like when my soldiers have a 92% chance to hit.

8 hours into the game, I love despite an awful ton of bugs. Something that I really dislike is how often my soldiers are shaken...

Well, I don't doubt that they can be immensly powerful in some situations.. Like I said, the struggle ist to get them into position, they depend on suitable terrain and distance more than anyone else, which makes them the least flexible troop imo. Problem I have with them is that it takes the full 2 turns to use the sniper rifle, if there is a perk for that I must've missed it. I move forward at a steady pace, so even if I find a good spot it's not that useful since I don't remain there for long. Timer is always ticking, I don't have time for endless positioning.

There are many situations where I don't find the sniper useful, either there isn't a good elevated spot available, or it is to remote from the mission target, and I can't camp forever because I have to do the objective. There's also a fair amount of indoor fighing (ufo missions etc) where you can't snipe from a distance anyway.

That perk is quite cool, I have it with my best ranger too. But there aren't alot of enemies to oneshot anymore, so I need to shred the armors before anyway, so it's Grenadiers all the way (and Specialists, the last few missions I had to deal with 2 sectopods per mission (have upped the difficulty)

One of my sharpshooters almost died lately right at the start of a mission (was bleeing out, had to carry him through the whole mission) because I put him on a roof and ofc he was rocketed down by a mech or sth.

I maybe just pi''ed because it's always them who miss the opening shot with 75+ %

Well usually I tend to first put my sniper or snipers in good positions on the way to the evac point while in stealth with my other troops more in front of them so they are a more likely target. Snipers are great for providing cover fire from above while your other troops fight in the streets. Their long range really helps and can be great for overwatch too. Once all enemies are dead they can move quickly to catch up with the others.

It's of course the combination of troops that work best. Grenadiers can take away cover and do some damage, and then snipers can take out the enemies without cover easily enough. And rangers are good for getting to out of the way enemies to melee them when they are in heavy cover.

Specialists have a great use due to an ability that lets them go into overwatch when using a full move.

    My A-team squad is generally:

    A shotgun focused ranger
    An explosives focused grenadier
A medical focused specialist (with robot hacking)
    A pistol focused sharpshooter
A psi operative with dominate and null lance

The 6th member rotates, usually a gun focused grenadier or another specialist.

If I think the mission won't be timed sometimes I will take a sniper instead of a gunslinger.

I waited relatively late to get psi ops, next game I'm going to get it as soon as possible. I love mind controlling an Andromedon and having it just soak up all the fire.

For my second playthrough I opted to not use psionics. I'm very much focused on sort of a commando team of action heroes, all in army camo. And I am using a mod that allows warden armor to use the kevlar appearances and another mod that unlocks conventional weapons as strong as plasma weapons along with plasma weapons.

I have this real cool veteran, Jane Verdoux, with white hair in a ponytail, a bandana and a scar on her face. Just because you never get to see an older woman in an action role its just something that gives her a lot of character.
She's also doing very well as a sniper, snipers do get some good abilities like a free pistol shot and some sort of advanced overwatch where they get to fire a shot at every enemy that enters in a sphere of vision. She saved the lives of other soldiers with that.

How do I unlock the extra slot on the special suits (Exo/WAR etc)? It says I need to research more advanced armor or sth., but I don't think there is anything left for me to research there.

You get them from the Proving Ground. You have to build each special suit there, it doesn't unlock it to build instantly like the basic suits and weapons.

That's pretty impressive yes, my last mission was also a VIP extraction but ended with a death. Guy never stood a chance.

There was a sectopod in the building I had to extract the VIP on, two codexes where there too, a guardian and several advent troops. And I triggered their detection when I thought I wouldnt.
