I think there is a text file called descr_sm_factions (there was in rtw) which identifies the traits of each faction. There should be a line that says
"custom_battle_availability", or something like that. Change it from "false" to "true" and then load up the game. I did this with rebels in rtw to test out my mercenary giants.

I have a pretty stupid question:
how do you get handgunners???? I checked the building browser and tried building an alchemist's lab, but I was still unable to get them. For a while I thought that you had to build several alchemist's labs to research the technology, but on the next turn, HRE ambushed me with them. So.... how do you get them?

Is there by any chance a way to appoint my faction heir by myself, instead of the computer appointing one for me? I remember I could do that in rtw, but apparently no longer. It is quite unpractical in the long run when I have to kill several family members appointed heir apparents, in order for the computer to choose the right one.
Sadly there is no way to appoint your own faction heir...they removed this for some unknown reason. (unknown to us).
@Bondus: Dont worry, just keep up the unit size and recruit people and that will keep the population down, im playin on 0.50 and it's beast.
@Nickpes: You can't play as the aztecs as default, you have to do a lot of modding and messing around.
@DarkLordSauron: just reduce the 'DATE' numbers in Descr_Events.txt in data/world/maps/campaign/imperial campaign file.
Actually, recruiting people does not affect population whatsoever. So that method of population control is no longer an option.
Ok, I got a noob question here, Ive looked in the game manual and also tried the tutorial and looking online before asking this. I was wondering if it is possible to set waypoints for your units while in battle? The AI seems very buggy while having a siege style battle, my units that are grouped seem to take differant directions to get to a point I click inside the Castle/Town. Thx for the help in advance.
they're in the higher level city barracks, the ones that cost 9600, i think. check the city barracks under the building browser and u should be able to see which ones.
This is sort of a dumb question, but why do some copies of the Medieval II: Total War game have "bumpy terrain land" on the mini map, and mine doesn't? ( mine is a Collectors Edition one)

Hi men.
I am playing as Portugal and my princess Maria has married an english general who became my family's member. The problem is that i cannot see their portrait in my family tree. Maria is not visible anymore in the tree and the english general have not apear in there. I think they have already a child but it is invisible too.
Do you think is it a bug? Has anyone here noticed that?
(Sorry for the bad english)
k i was just wondering if it is possible to choose ur faction heir. As in Rome i could choose which of the guys on the family tree suceeds the king/leader after the leader passes away but i cant seem to do it in M:TW2. Is it possible?
No the ability to choose your faction heir isn't in the game, sorry.
(FAQ updated).
Trajan, thank you for your answer.
Yes, I am sure he has joined my family because now I can move him, fight with him and he carry my banner, but I cannot see him or his wife.
Noob question alert!I cannot seem to alter my soldier's stats. I installed an unpacker (the v1.1) but it didn't do anything someone please help!!!
Ok, so I downloaded Medieval 2 from direct2drive and installed the game, I made a folder named "Medieval 2 Total War" and placed it into program files just like all my games are. When I try to patch it the tool cant find the path so I just put "C:\Program Files\Medieval 2 Total War" as the path for the files to be extracted into since that is where the game is located, but when I load up the game it still says its ver 1.0. Can someone please tell me how to manually patch the game? Ive emailed SEGA and have not had any reply.
Conquistador: Are you talking about editing stats in the xml files?
If you are, then you need to make sure uncheck the read-only box in the file properties. Then after you make the changes, save the file and recheck the read-only box. If you don't do that, the game automatically writes over your changes.
No, I just want to edit the descr_unit file, and I have deleted the geography folders, so that's not it. The game must be loading from the pack files, and every time I delete one and do a custom battle it crashes. I once saw that you had to create a "mymod" but I don't remember where I saw it and don't know how to make one. OH and high3agle you extract the files and it should load a page that has a "main" file there's a program called "setup.exe", it might be on the first page though, anyways click that and it should take you through installation.![]()
There's a tool available to download from here that creates it for you.
