Has the AI learned how to attack across water by sending units in ships?

I can also vouch for that. I just had a Spanish army land in Normandy via boat.

Does anyone know how to change the names of the starting kings/generals/princesses in the game? I'm using ETH's Separation Mod - High Period, but it annoys me to have start with William the Conqueror in 1230AD.

I've tried changing the name in the descr_strat.txt - the game runs fine, but the name is blank. Where else does the name need to be changed? Or is it hardwired into the game, and only turns up in the descr_strat.txt incidentally?

I know it's a fiddling small change to worry about, but I'd love to put my own name in and start my own fantasy dynasty.

I'm sorry about this noob question and the fact that it may have been answered countless times on this site, but I haven't been able to find it. I just bought the game today and after I installed it, I tried to open the game but it said I would need a graphics card with 1.1 pixel shader or better. Could I download this? and freely if possible?

how can i get a list of the unit id to use in the console codes. the id for units with two names like Mailed Knights never work.

most of the create _unit codes work but only for units with one name like Voulgier or Longbowmen.

Also none of the create unit codes work for naval units like Carracks etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..I am new to the series ..but not codes And enjoy just seeing the different units in action.

I've used the search on the forum but no luck .

Ah, I know this one. I got this error as well and it drove me crazy. Mine was due to the video card fan that didn't cool well enough. The video card would heat up and shut itself down (ati feature). Get one of those slot fans and put it next to the video card and the problem is solved.

Why is there no 'Deployment' phase when defending cities/castles? I don't know if this is just me or something, but everytime I defend a city I get a view of all my soldiers and a "start battle" button, but no way to deploy my troops. It's very annoying because then I have to pause and set up everything manually and that takes time... Was just wondering if anyone else had this problem? I can deploy my troops when I'm the attacker.

What you describe only happens when a spy opens the gates I believe.

If a spy hasn't open the gates you can still deploy your troops...though I don't think there are any battle speeches for defenders.

Wow, While I am sure this worked for you I would not suggest purchasing new hardware until you are positive that you have tried everything on the OS level first. My first suggestion would be to upgrade your drivers. I have heard others saying, especially with older cards like 9600 and 9800s that they needed to do a driver update before the game was playable. Afterwards they had no problems. I am a network engineer and I would never suggest someone purchase new hardware until they have tried everything else first. Throwing hardware at a problem is rarely the answer.

I love to play as the papacy, and have never had any problems at all. Crusades aren't disabled either, you can even go on the crusades as the pope himself if you like. Anyone you attack or attacks you is excommunicated. You get Family members, but not by birth. You can't be destroyed. The one and only problem is Papal favor, since it can't detect the "Papal Staes" it uses the favor points of the first faction on the list of Cathoic factions that are alive. So if France is the first faction on the list, and has only 3 favor points, you won't be able to call or request a crusade.

I am pretty sure that you can't (unless you downloaded a mod that lets you).
    To get more generals you:
    A. Wait for one of your kids to come of age
    B. Bribe a general belonging to another faction
    C. Marry a princess or female family member
    D. Get a captain promoted

    About D:
How does your captain get promoted. Does he need to have won a number of crushing victories or what?

You can recruit generals by either modding them in yourself or downloading a mod. If you're willing to do it yourself, follow the instructions in this post. If you want to download a mod that does it for you, look in the Mod Threads and the Hosted Modifications forum for the mod that's right for you.
