Default Dear lord the AI can't handle sieges; is there any way to end a battle as a win when the AI's siege equipment is destroyed?

Defending Tingis against the Lusitani and had one army deploying on the north side of the city while transports decided to drop the army off on the southern coast....where there are no allied troops nor siege equipment.

The northern army was repulsed and their reinforcements spent 37 minutes (yes, 37) doing nothing. They didn't even assemble or try and burn the gates, they just jutter-walked aimlessly, if they even moved at all.

Is there any way at all of getting around this? Is there any kind of cheat/mod/cure-all that can resolve this annoying bug that I've had to deal with several times already? I just cannot understand why the game can't just automatically declare it a victory when the AI runs out of siege equipment/ammo or why the AI doesn't pull out and retreat like it did 10 years ago.

Other than this I've been enjoying my campaign but this bug just keeps cropping up again and again.

    To be honest,
within +500 hours of playtime in GC I probably defended my settlements one 3 or 4 times. I'm sure other people would agree that the player only very rarely gets into situations where he actually has to defend his settlements which is in my opinion also the reason why it was never fixed...

Defending against AI is also bugged when AI attacks from the sea cause as soon as all shore spots are in use and all land units defeated the AI will just sit on sea and do nothing. You either have to give up in such situations with or without battle timer or fast forward the 60 mins...

Yes, it's weird in the first place that such battles are so rare and the fact that they're also buggy and not well-thought-out is evidence to me that CA simply swept it under the rug...

I usually avoid playing sieges altogether unless it is a settlement I cannot easily or quickly reconquer.

Assaults are deadly in my opinion. If you play them, the AI get huge bonuses and almost never routs and it is a fight to the death and you lose a lot of men playing it yourself. Except for the heavy elephant and cavalry loses, autoresolve does the job quite decently.

wtf? Really? In that case I am doing it wrong

also, agree with OP, if you can defeat one army the remnant units that have retreated and rallied don't seem to give you trouble while the other army is attacking. Like a noob player who forgets about his units. I assume they can't figure a path to join up with the other army

Maybe it's different with factions you like to play, as athens there isn't much to protect in the beginning

Bloody hell it's happened again. Shame to hear that no workaround has been found, I guess I need to drop the timer down to 40 or even 30 minutes for battles. Thank god for windowed mode, now I can kill time inbetween doing real life stuff while waiting for this 36minutes of the AI doing nothing to pass

Definitely. I remember back in the early days and even more recently when it was argued that siege battles were barely thought out and that the lack of walls was a work-around for siege bugs it was initially considered by some to be a conspiracy theory and something that would get resolved with time and patches. Unsurprisingly, they were wrong.

I don't often play assaults simply for the time aspect (I don't want to spend hours playing at a time, would rather let the efficient AI auto-calc a battle if it can come out with 80% or more men alive) but in the case of siege defences I like to play a lot of them. Even if I can't win I can whittle the enemy down something fierce....although it also tends to ruin my mood, ie now
