Default DEI - Is playing he Roman Faction challenging?

I am looking to play the Roman faction but am looking for a mod that makes it a lot more challenging. I bought Rome 2 to play the Romans, not Pontus, or Bactria. The Romans didn't exactly steamroll over everyone at least in terms of history.

Is DEI the mod that I should be using, or can you recommend a mod that introduces that difficulty for the Roman faction?

Try Kam's experimental mod along with DEI. Makes battles much more challenging.

actually i find the romans to be pretty challenging, at the start your limited to polybian units which is pretty much hastati and principes armed with SPEARS, and reforms are quite a long way off. Carthage is more capable to challenge you and you will have trouble subduing barbs in the north. Money at the start is tougher good luck fielding one full legion for a good few turns. The roman factions along with just about everything in rome 2 is made 10x harder in dei (i mean if they managed to make the game easier than rome 2 they may as well delete their twc accounts and gain a steam achievement). DEI is definitely much more enjoyable as the roman faction in DEI.

If anything, the mod's free, if you have the bandwidth download it and give it a spin.

Thanks Bonaparte and Kam for your comments. Sounds like I am at the right place. I'll give DEI a spin.

I wouldn't call it challenging exactly, but you can't steamroll everything right off the bat like you normally can in vannila. it is also possible to hamstring yourself economically if you don't exercise a little bit of patience for the first few turns.

And as overlordy said, be careful with getting your senate influence too high too quickly.

Rome is one of the easier factions. This is both by design (of the game and mod) and because the larger factions are inherently easier at the start. Rome is a great entry faction for most players and can still be difficult at higher difficulty levels.

We have made some changes in 1.0 so that the bonuses we originally gave to Rome overall now mainly go to the Rome AI. However, some original help for Rome remains because one of the original intents of the mod was to have Rome and Carthage survive at least in some campaigns.

    This is the one:

I've yet to test it out fully but Dresden endorses it. So go for it. The starting diplomatic expansionism penalties with Rome are pretty severe... esp with the family with diplomatic penalties.

Depends on your playing style really. Granted, I can conquer Liguria by the 3rd turn but need to look ahead as to what's needed to stabilize it while considering my budget for my homeland and to increase income. DEI makes you plan ahead but if you plan ahead then playing as Rome can become easier during later turns. This is true with alot of the major fractions in the game though...
