Default Curbed freedom of expression in Turkey - how much truth in this article?

    http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/2015/02/turkey-coming-police-state-150225121446232.html

THe gist: "In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Turkey's parliament passed the first 10 articles of a controversial, 132-article domestic security bill that had in recent weeks sparked fistfights among parliamentarians and silent protests from the opposition.
    ...
Opposition parties argue that the bill, if made law, would create a police state. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have denounced it. Freedom House believes "the future of Turkish democracy hangs in the balance". "

A few examples of what the article suggests is the security bill: "Top police officers can now verbally approve strip searches and car searches, without a warrant. Protesters can be doused with coloured water that stains the skin for three days; detained for 48-hours without any chance to contact loved ones; and jailed for up to five years for full or partial covering of their face. That's right - demonstrators in Turkey are legally barred from protecting their faces from tear gas

    "

Even if 50% true, that article spells black days coming for Turkey's democracy. Can someone from there verify if truth is as bleak as it sounds in that article? I doubt that Turks would within 5-6 years shift so dramatically to authoritarian measures. OK, elections IIRC are still free, but the state being able to exert so much control effectively would make government a "few people's club" that would rotate in power and be able to do whatever they please.

In practice, it's always been a police state one way or the other. The bill is simply a result of AKP realizing that they don't have the full control of judicial system and they want to use the police much more openly and freely.

Yes, but according to the Al Jajeera article, it's now illegal to try to protect your face from the gas! Police can keep you locked for 48 hours without anyone knowing where you are etc. That's a LOT of steps towards the wrong direction.

No goverment should even have control of a judicial system, that goes against democratic free state as a concept, where you have seperation of powers.

Hasn't Erdogan heard of checks and balances?

How do the Turks keep electing this party? Not even the Republicans in the US would pull something this drastic without imploding the power of the party for decades.

It is though. If you think Erdoğan bases his ideals on Quran you'll gonna have a lot of false points on him as well.
