Default TWC Total War Attila benchmark thread - last update: 26. December 2016

Spoiler for Intro / Intention of this thread / Procedere / Thread rules

Looking for Warhammer benchmarks? Have a read here.
Looking for Rome 2 or Shogun 2 benchmarks? Then get over here.

This thread is combined for Attila benchmarks only.

Dear TWC fellows, historians, armchair generals,

having Attila playable at your hands is just a glimpse away, very much depending your internet line though. As it seems also very much depending on your hardware configuration.

This thread should continue the legacy of the Shogun 2 and Rome 2 benchmark thread I've started in August 2013.
With more than 75k views, it was one of the most read threads among the Total War 2 technical threads.

    Intention:
This thread should be reserved to keep up what we've started first. By mentioning "we" I kindly invite YOU to participate again to post your Attila benchmark results here - according the rules -, to give this thread a sense and weight.
It's true there are a lot of tech sites posting benchmarks but some of you - just like me - might like to have other sources in addition or to backup the professional benchmarking results around the web. Most of the professional reviewers cannot give figures about older hardware and most of all only use the most modern rigs (to avoid bottlenecks).

    Procedere:
As soon the game will be out, I will elaborate "rules" how we can define a good standard, as cross comparisons are not possible to Shogun 2 and Rome 2.
Sorry that this thread is empty at this very beginning but I hope, that many will participate again.

    Thread rules:
    - this is not a rant or praise thread. Those are stickied in the Attila subforum.
Please strictly avoid vents and argues and keep your focus on submitting results and BENCHMARK related discussions. Thank you very much for your understanding

    - the idea of this thread is to deliver real life benchmarks for Attila, across different rigs, to help the community to estimate the performance for their current or upcoming computers as things like "can I run it" and the official "sys requirements" do fail to give a good picure.

    - to allow a most objective comparison possible between the computers, further rules for benchmarking will be elaborated so check the rules BEFORE putting efforts into benchmarking.

    - most likely we won't discuss ingame peformance but will focus on the ingame benchmark, regardless if it is good enough or not, as it is not possible to ensure a standardized method for measurements. Previous ideas to use replays failed practically.

    Drivers den:

    - Get your latest Nvidia drivers: Click here:
    - Get your latest AMD & ATI GPU, AGPU and mainboard drivers: Click here:
    - Get your latest Intel iGPU HD xxxx and mainboard drivers: Click here

    1. General rules before benchmarking:
    - only use the given presets, do not alter the settings manually to make the results comparative! Do not use the "optimal settings" for the benchmark either!

    - Attila doesn't save any log files - again- for the benchmarking process. If you got a "downgrade message" due to insufficient video memory please do not submit this results as it is not comparable - it has individual downgrades
Instead pick the next lower preset. Only use unlimited video memory if you use an inbuild on die CPU like AMD Axxx CPU, Intel HDxxxx etc.

    - You do not need to run all presets if your machine is not capable enoug (3-4 GB VRAM needed for extreme quality btw).
It would be helpful enough if you can submit at least one preset where no "downgrade massage" message appeared. Refer above.

    - never use unlimited memory options if you have a laptop card or discrete card in your PC.

    - keep your drivers for your mainboard (e.g. Intel Chipset drivers / AMD southbridge driver up to date. Refer the drivers den for new drivers.

    - keep your Windows updated, including the so-called "optional" updates, they contain non security related but needed updates, you need to enable them in the Windows Update settings.

    - I am aware that the Attila benchmark still does not reflect the ingame performance that much as it still misses massive close combat situations. However it is the only tool we have to get objective comparisons. Please do not post "in-game" performance figures here, and just use the benchmark.

    2. How to obtain, use and submit cpu-z.txt results
    - results without CPU-Z logs won't be included in the original post
    - Download CPU-Z. CPU-Z is free and available here: http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z..._1.71.1-en.exe
    - Install CPU-Z. It does not contain any adware or malware.
    - To create a cpu-z.txt file open CPU-Z > open the "About" Tab > Save Report (TXT) > Save the file where you like and can find it later.

    - How to enclose the a cpu-z.txt logfile in your post:

There are several options for that:
    a. use a cloud / uploading service like Onedrive etc
    b. use TWC attach file feature
    c. use pastebin.com (no account required)
    d. write me an e-mail with the logfile attached to: twcbenchmarks@chynet.de, don't forget to include your forum name please.

    3. Temporarily needed system changes:

    - set Windows Energy settings to "performance" to avoid a temporary downclocking of your CPU / RAM

    - disable all unneccerary processes and (system tray) applications, especially webbrowsers like chrome, and Antivirus programs, like Windows Defender in Windows 8 / 10 or Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows XP / Vista / 7.

    4. Rules how to post your results:

When submitting a benchmark result, please state the following:
    - average FPS (at least)
    - minimum FPS
    - maximum FPS
    - include a cpu-z.txt log, refer above
    - name the preset in use
    - don't forget to include your in-game resolution

Icon3 Re: TWC Total War Attila benchmark thread

    Multicore and Hyperthreading comparison:

    Verdict:

    Hyperthreading compatibility:
At the first glance, Attila 1.0 does not take a good advantage from existing and enabled Hyperthreading.
    When
using demanding settings, it seems you will have even higher framerates when Hyperthreading is disabled.
On the other hand, on lower presets Hyperthreading does improve the speed, which led me to a conclusion that my GPU seems to be a bottleneck at higher settings.

    Multicore compatibility and scalability:

Attla's scalability in the benchmark is very limited. As soon you have a CPU that actually has 2 physical cores (dualcore) and Hyperthreading enabled, you nearly reached the top of the performance you can get from this game. Having more cores than 2 does not improve the show very much - given they run all the same clock speed.
Additionally running Attila with a solely single core is not possible at all as the the game and Windows will competely frozen. As this only affects due the intro and background animation I guess this is a matter of both things does not run with single core CPUs at all, while the game technically could support. This is why all 1 core / HT off have no figures (NA), because it is impossible to run the game at all.

    Conclusion:
    At the moment
an Intel i3 (dualcore with hyperthreading) with a high CPU clock rate (GHz) could be the best pick for the price in terms of performance for Attila, whilst having an i5 (quad core without HT) or even an i7 (quad core with Hyperthreading) does not really deal out their higher price. This all said and taken with a grain of salt as typically the i5 / i7 have higher stock clock rates and turbo clock rates, and on top of the that the "K" models can be overclocked very much.

My next benchmark will be focused on scalability in terms of Overclocking and how much Overclocking will give you higher frame rates.

    Overclocking / performance efficiency comparison:

This test should give an idea, whether or not the game scales up with higher performance potentials on the CPU, when the Benchmark is used. Unfortunately it shows clearly that the CPU does not play a vital role in the benchmark, as there is quite no difference if you have an i7 running at 5.1 GHz or 4.6 GHz or even the standard turbo clock of "just" 3.8 GHz.

+1 great idea! (you wont see my results until 50% off).
basically I appreciate your "comeback" and contribution. I am looking forward to it. Your wished 50% off is already in place, if you like to check my best prices thread.

Oh 50% is tempting just because am a sucker for Anglo-Saxons and Norse...I studied them for so long. And yes on these lonely nights and all I have is books on the vikings etc...

May odin watch over me! Hehe.

give it a go, I really preordered just for threads like that. Not sure I am going to play it actively - or even being able to play it (free time / performance wise).

    back to topic:

If there is anyone that has contributed on the previous benchmark thread and want to discuss about the testing methodology, any feedback is very appreciated.

    i5 4670k @4.2
    gtx 970
    8gbs 1600 Mhz ram
    Win 8.1

Game runs way better than Rome 2 for me. Playing at all Max Quality, except shadows to Quality, Particle to Quality, and Screen Space Reflections to Quality. Large unit sizes, SSAO off.

Campaign map is like butter. Rome II still lags after 16 patches, especially when you have a spy or some sort selected.

Only played a handful of turns, one battle was a land battle, silky smooth.

The game is friggin great. Patches, mods and drivers just might make this the best TW game to date. IMO. Easily a much better launch than Rome II.

Performance is abit over the place. For a siege battle or a large 4v4 - it is basically unplayable regardless of setting.
For a standard battle with 1v1 in open land it runs good.

Probably going to have to stick with Shogun 2 until new hardware is acquired.

With all due respect...you are trying to run a 4vs4 fully stacked out game on that CPU? Really? Just saying.

Works fine with Shogun 2. Could even run it with fraps.

Meh, runs fine, don't have it max or anything, shadows are off but it ran fine with them on I just never like shadows in these types of games.

It runs far far far better than Rome 2 does, still has small hitching issues but I'm also not on the latest drivers.

Also, I'm getting smooth frames, not really looking at a number but it doesn't feel sluggish. Campaign map is pretty dang nice and battles were fine.

As for if it looks better than rome, oh god yes is that a rhetorical question?

    Running a G75VX

    i7 3630qm

    670mx 3gb

    16gb ram

    SSD 200 gb installed

Unplayable. Runs worse than Rome 2 except for the campaign map.

Not at all. I get a crash on the splash screen and thats after spending half an hour fiddling around with th missing executible bug that steam games seem to get all the goddamn time.
    Not impressed, CA.

This isn't a CA issue, but a your PC issue.

Everything maxed, except AA that is on 2x. 45-70 FPS during benchmark @ 1080p.
Slightly better performance during real battles. ( average 65 )

Windows 8.1, EVGA Precision X to OC GPU, which seems to be key here, as it doesn't utilize 100% off CPU/GPU.

I will fine-tune the settings and hopefully be able to maintain a good FPS during large battles.

Also, game reports my 980 to have 3Gb VRAM. Should be a config file somewhere to change this.

    i7 4770k @ 4.8Ghz
    980 @ 1550 ( one mhz more and it will explode )

Hmm ok. Well I wouldn't know, my knowledge of technology more or less got away from me in high school
That being said I can run Rome 2 on high across all settings. Either way, I'll see how things go over the next few days, in the meantime there's always BI mods haha

Thank you, will have a look when I get home from work. I can't remember how it was done in Rome 2!
