I have also random crashes in battles. I've got also a Geforce 970 GTX. There is not even a Crash Report or a message. The game just shuts down. Can't Play.

Glad to see I am not the only one having this issue. Hope a new patch comes out June 25 with everything else

Could be your graphics card getting too got and it shuts down/throttles down.
I've seen that a couple of times, and started tracking my card's temperatures.

Using MSI Afterburner helped to tweak the fan speeds so that the fans worked much harder once the temperatures go above 40 degrees C
To be safe I also added more fans to the case to improve airflow and reduce temperatures for all components.
    Didn't have problems after that

This black screen occurs very often for me, nearly unplayable battles happens almost every time I play a battle. However it doesn't just give me a black screen and background audio, italso freezes my computer where I have to force it to shut down. Usually I can avoid the freeze if I control+alt+delete right when it happens and it'll just do the audible black screen and the "Display driver has stopped responding but has recovered" or "application has been blocked from accessing graphics hardware" popup on the task bar. This also happens to me when I play Attila. It seems like this has been happening since I got the 980 gtx and only happens in the new total war games.

After messing around with a lot of things trying to figure it out, I tried disabling my other monitors, and it did reduce the freeze and black screen. I played a weekend of Rome2 and only had it occur once, but after the next day I played some more with the disable monitors and I had about 4 black screens and freezes in a 2 hour period. One of them unusually I got a audible black screen when in campaign map when it always happens in battles. So I'm not entirely sure if the disabled monitors helped or not.

Does anyone else get the lethal freezes with their computer when the black screen occurs? I'd be okay if it was just the black screens, but when it freezes my computer I'm a bit worried. I posted about this on the official forums last week but haven't got any responses.

If it matters here's the dxdiag, http://pastebin.com/x3z9TnLp

Ok I get this and my game will go black, Then displayport txt notification comes up on my monitor black screen letting me know the connection has dropped. And i can now hear the battle going on, If i hit escape i can hear the game pause, Then resume and so forth so i presume it is still working fine. I can CTRL+ALTDEL out too and simply kill the exe and start again without rebooting.

Highly annoying on Legendary and my 980 GTX was tested both at defaults (factory OC) and 1500mhz boost with what seems like the same % of crashes. Could it be our pre-overclocks though? I run the game in 4K so it is pretty damm stressful with my 1500mhz boost OC i get 92c with the fan 100% which seems like awesome coding.

I used to have this happen to me more frequently but now it rarely happens, and if it does, only in large battles including ~4 stacks. The solution seems to be adjusting your power management, eg. in the NVidia CP set the Rome2.exe to run at max performance all the time rather than "Adaptive". Also make sure your normal windows power management is set to high performance mode. Hopefully this will help some of you. Note: running gtx 960, i5-4690, and 8gb ram.

neep, Nimble, I was running on i7 960 3.23Ghz, gtx 960, 24gb ram and having black screen ctds 2-3 times per 2 hour session. I implemented your tweaks to MSI, Nvidia CP and Windows power management. Last night played for 3.5 hrs with two huge battles without a problem and tonight ditto.
My wife asked me thereafter, "How are you supposed to find out this stuff?" "From smart guys on the forums."
Hard to fathom that I replaced my gtx470 gpu which hadn't had the problem with the 960 and then got black screen ctds. What's up with that? Of course, I'd been running with a lot of the game's visuals set to minimums for the old card. Goosed those up for the 960 which then ran the diagnostic at 55 fps; so we're good here right? No. The 960 gets a lot hotter than the 470 even sitting in a Cooler Master case with three honking fans and two more on the card. So your tweaks were required, clearly.
    Thanks; +rep to you both.

"With a population of around a million, Rome (in Claudius' time) was a vast city even by modern standards. It is worth pointing out that during the early Renaissance the population of Rome was no more than fifteen thousand-- living amid the ruins of a civilization that dwarfed their own. It was not until the nineteenth century that the population of Rome returned to the levels it had enjoyed under the Caesars. That is eloquent proof of the fact that human history is not a tale of steady progress towards greater knowledge and achievement." Simon Scarrow

Glad to be of help Sir.
I'm surprised that your newer GPU had issues, especially since it's power output seems much less.
When I was fiddling around with this, I was surprised to read - and my own experimentation also showed this - that it's not just raw air in/out but also how it flows inside the case.
Adding a more powerful CPU air cooler actually degraded overall performance since it forced too much hot air to circulate in my case instead of being expelled. Plus, it's not a high performance case.

I thought Cooler Master cases would be better than this - since that's their reputation.
But, glad that you got it sorted out.

    neep,
    Interesting about air flow.
We have a condo on both coasts. East coast rig is as above. West coast is a new Alienware desktop with a much more muscular cpu, the same 960 gpu and 12gb ram; it's a Clydesdale of a system. My wife refers to them as Beast East and West. Yet I had also experienced the black screen ctd out west. It only happened once out there, not 2-3 time per night but Beast West has a chill water cooling system! So when I get back to San Diego, I'll put in the same fixes that have worked here, but it's strange.

    Hmm, interesting..
I'm assuming that both your GPU and CPU is plumbed in to the water loop ?

I'm surprised to hear that a water cooled GPU might hit this issue, water should be able to remove lots of heat to avoid this problem.
Again, perhaps it's an air flow issue ? Maybe you're not getting enough flow through your radiators to cool things down sufficiently ?

I'm not sure of the exact plumbing; I know it monitors both CPU and GPU as well as six other points in the cabinet. It's an Alienware Area 51 system; we opened it up to install the SSD and it's pretty densely packed in there even tho it stands 40 inches high, weighs 62 pounds and looks like it came off the space shuttle. The labeling and wire runs are pristine; never seen anything like it before. There's only one each supply and exhaust fan so it must depend on the chill water system primarily.

    Aha..
From Dell's website it looks like the CPU is water cooled but the GPU is air cooled.

So - check the fans and filters for dust bunnies; give the insides a blast of CO2; and tweak your settings to run the GPU fans a little faster than default.
    You should be good.

neep, thanks makes sense; you b da man! Had two ctds this evening in the campaign screens; can't imagine that's a cpu problem; must be something in the R2, Dei code.

Paladin247, glad to be of help! Not sure I can say much regarding your cooling as I just got back from a 2 week holiday in California and it's certainly a lot hotter than England! My 960 is cooled with just case fans in a Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 (m-atx) and rarely goes above 60 degrees celsius (140 fahrenheit), UK weather has is perks, right?
