    The prevaling wisdom seems to be that a single line specifying sprites files in the desc_model_battle file has no impact on performance, but (at least for my machine) adding a line for each faction noticably improves performance. So, for aor greek archers, I have this:

    model_sprite Slave, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite greek_cities, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite thrace, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite seleucid, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite macedon, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite spain, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite gauls, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr
    model_sprite germans, 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr

    instead of this:

    model_sprite 60.0, data/sprites/spain_aor_greek_archers_sprite.spr

    Large battles are much smoother with the first version. Give it a try for yourself and see.
