Jewish centre bombing: Argentine prosecutor Nisman found dead

An Argentine federal prosecutor who accused President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner last week of a cover-up has been found shot dead at his home in the capital, Buenos Aires.

Alberto Nisman was investigating the 1994 bombing of a Jewish centre in Buenos Aires in which 85 people died. On Wednesday, he accused the president of involvement in a plot to cover up Iran's alleged role in the bombing. The president's spokesman dismissed the allegations as "ridiculous".

    'No burglary'
Mr Nisman, 51, was found dead by his mother in the bathroom of his home. Investigating prosecutor Viviane Fein said he had been shot once. She said an autopsy was under way and its results would be made public later on Monday. Ms Fein ruled out burglary as a motive. "It [the apartment] was in perfect condition, there was no mess, nothing was missing," she said. She also said that no suicide note had been found in the flat.

Earlier, the Security Ministry released a statement saying that Mr Nisman's bodyguards had raised the alarm after he failed to answer their phone calls on Sunday. Concerned about his welfare, they fetched Mr Nisman's mother and tried to enter his apartment, the statement said. They found the door locked from the inside with a key still stuck inside. After a locksmith gained access, they found Mr Nisman's body in the bathroom. According to the statement, a gun and a cartridge shell were found next to his body.

    Key hearing
Mr Nisman was due to give evidence at a congressional committee hearing on Monday to outline his accusations against President Fernandez and other officials. File photo from 18 July 1994 showing rescue workers searching the rubble of the Argentine-Israeli Mutual Association community centre after a car bomb exploded Eighty-five people died in the 1994 bombing.

He had published a 300-page report on Wednesday alleging that the president and Foreign Minister Hector Timerman had opened a secret back channel to Iranians suspected of involvement in the bombing of the community centre. Mr Nisman alleged that the scheme was intended to clear the Iranian suspects in order to facilitate a trade deal between Iran and Argentina. He said that he had issued a request that a judge question the president and the foreign minister "for being authors and accomplices of an aggravated cover-up and obstruction of justice regarding the Iranians accused of the Amia [Israeli-Argentine Mutual Association] terrorist attack".

The car bombing of the seven-storey building was the worst terrorist attack in Argentina's history. In 2007, Argentine prosecutors accused Iran of planning and financing the attack, and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah of carrying it out. Iran dismissed the allegations as "baseless". So far, no-one has been convicted in connection with the Amia attack. Last July, at events marking the 20th anniversary of the bombing, Pope Francis demanded justice for the victims. In a recorded video to mark the anniversary, the Pope described the attack as an "act of madness".

Argentinian institutions seem to still be in constant decay, apparently like the current party has absolutely no limits. Will they leave power peacefully?

Cover ups, international conspiracy and murder... This is the sort of thing you expect to hear in Hollywood movies, not the news.

I only hope that there's someone in position to pick up where Nisman left off; it'd be a real shame if his murder would achieve its purpose.

So convenient I don't really know who to suspect.

It could be the Kirchnner's last gamble after they considered the political damage of that investigation was worse than killing the guy. It could be a move from the opposition to frame the Ks and cause a political uproar or it could be iranians trying to make sure this stuff stays in the dark.

You could easily make a movie abut this.

I can't claim any real knowledge of Argentina's inner workings, but it seems they are not far off being Venezuela Part 2.

What can I say... this smells like some sort of SIDE (secretary of intelligence, kind of shadier Homeland Security) related incident to cover up some disturbing inner workings. We'll have to wait and see.

Well it is hard to guess what is true and what is not. Especially if this were indeed a cover up murder (I am slow to cry "conspiracy") facts will be rare and investigation? Perhaps never happening...

On a first glance, I read about it earlier in the news, it sounds suspicious. Very.

It seems Argentina is slipping back into the dirty war more and more every day. Hope we get those new carriers on time...

They can't use the Moroccan gambit, have the King order his subjects to human wave the Falklands. That requires transports.

Unless the Pope can grant them by proxy water walking.

No gunpowder in the hands, yet the police still insists he commited suicided. CK released a note about possible motivations for his alleged suicide, for real. Can't believe the Argentinians will let her slip.

Why do they see the need to keep up a narrative? It just makes the whole thing more murky. It's so blatantly obvious I'm surprised they even bother.
He just happened to kill himself on the eve of a major corruption trial? Oh yeah sure, we'll buy that... Why not just rig the trial, it'd be a dam-sight less transparent and harder to detect.
If your going to run a corrupt Government, at least do it correctly.

Someone who accuses Iran and Hezbollah to bomb 90 Jews in Argentine to smithereens does not sound like the most stable person to me.

And whats to gain for Kirchner even if it where so that she had him killed? The "300 page report" is out there.

It was to send a message to Israel that they can assassinate Jews anywhere in the world, and it had to be spectacular in order to drive it home.

Dropping this here as it seems relevant enough, if anyone thinks it better suited in its own topic, go ahead and split it away.

Argentina's president formally charged over alleged terrorist attack cover-up

Nisman had alleged that Fernandez entered into “an alliance with terrorists” starting in 2011 to exonerate five Iranian suspects from responsibility in the Amia Jewish community center bombing.
Based on Nisman’s complaint, the president, foreign minister Héctor Timerman and legislator Andrés Larroque stand accused of concealment and obstruction, for trying to hide the responsibility of the five suspects.

“This is an active judicial coup,” said cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich on Friday . “There is no proof at all. The people have to know that this is a vulgar lie, an enormous press operation.”
Another of Kirchner’s closest advisers, presidential secretary Aníbal Fernández, dismissed the charges as “ridiculous, embarrassing and a clear maneuver of anti-democratic destabilization”.

It would seem indeed that Argentina is going for an interal confrontation. Let's hope it stays with words and the courts and doesn't escalate further. Obstruction is a heavy charge for a president, I don't want to be that judge...

Argentina is one of those countries where you just have to shake your head and wonder how they messed it up so badly.

Can't blame feudalism, since the Souith Koreans managed to sort themselves out.

    Sure, why not.

Sounds convincing enough for the average CNN watcher.
