Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Hello all,
I know this has been explained in tutorials but after reading them and watching Youtube I still cannot get it to work. I can't even find many of the files they are referring to. I have only been playing STW2 for a few days and attempting to for the last 6 hours but have hit a wall.
I think I have all the tools needed - MMS, PFM, Official_mod_tools
I am starting to wonder if file names got changed after patches etc as many of the tutorials are rather old but fear that it may just be me.
Could some kind soul please give me step by step instructions on how to switch the province specialties with each other?? I really just need help finding the location of the files to edit and think I could probably figure the rest out myself from what I've read.
Also of possible can I switch the starting position of two clans, specifically the Mori and Chokosabe? I have not looked into this much yet but thought I could kill two birds with on stone as they say.
Thank you in advance for any replies I get and please bear in mind that I am currently very much a newbie to this

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Download the Official mod tools using Steam.
I recommend reading this tutorial on the official modding tools
http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=564514
1) Open Tweak, which is located in the "total war shogun 2\modding\binaries" folder, click on the "Tools" option and select DAVE.
2) Click on the "View" option, and select "Table Launcher".
This will bring up all the DB tables and Startpos entries.
Open the DB table campaign_map_towns_and_ports.
Change the "slot_type" to the type of province specialties you want this region to have.
If you don't want this region to have a province specialties then set the "slot_type" to "SHO_region_specialty_farm".
When finished click the Apply button.
Open the DB table start_pos_towns_and_ports.
In the "building" column select the type and level of your province specialties present in this region.
If you don't want this region to have province specialties then leave the "building" column blank.
When finished click the Apply button.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Switch the starting position of two clans instart_pos_regions.
Open Bob, which is located in the "total war shogun 2\modding\binaries" folder.
1)In the "Raw Data" column go to the "EmpireDesignData/Datebase" folder and check the "campaign_map_towns_and_ports" box.
Then press the "start" button to build a mod pack.
2)Use the mod pack as a mod.
3)Open Bob again, in the "Raw Data" menu go to the "EmpireDesignData/campaign" folder and check the "jap_shogun" box. On the pop-up menu select "all". In order to create the startpos.esf BOB needs to start TWS2; so when prompted start TWS2. You need to have Steam running before you start TWS2. When asked if you want to load a mod pack select the mod pack you made in 1).
Press the "start" button to build the startpos.esf files.
Add the new startpos.esf from the "total war shogun 2\modding\working_data" folder to a mod pack using the Pack File Manager (PFM). The startpos.esf has to go in the campaigns\jap_shogun folder. Use the mod pack as a mod.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Thank you very much for the response, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I still haven't got it to work yet but I am starting to really understand how it works now so feel it will only be a matter of time.
At the moment though I do have a couple of questions:
I am not sure I'm understanding the "Use the mod pack as a mod" bit, could you elaborate please?
Also I can't seem to find the campaigns\jap_shogun folder you mention...?
I am in the middle of using BOB to create the pack file for another attempt and this time it is taking a lot longer. Looking at it's status some of the items are listen in orange with a "Finished with warning" message, should this be a cause for concern? They are process: regions map and trade routes.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
"Use the mod pack as a mod"
Put the mod.pack in :\steam\SteamApps\common\Total War SHOGUN 2\data
to find the campaigns\jap_shogun folder
Create such a folder in your mod.pack

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
"Finished with warning"
It doesn't matter.
Only thing you need in the first mod.pack is "db/campaign_map_towns_and_ports". Delete every thing else before you put it in :\steam\SteamApps\common\Total War SHOGUN 2\data

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Thank you for the help, I have followed your instructions and created the pack file then deleted unnecessary parts. I decided to scale back my first mod somewhat until I get results so am now only concentrating on giving the Iyo province naval tradition. The problem now is that once I loaded the mod it doesn't seem to have changed anything.
My current pack file looks like:
db/campaign_map_towns_ports_tables/campaign_map_towns_ports
jap_shogun/rules.bob
/scripting.lua
/startpos.esf
I then copied it into the steam Shogun/data folder. Am I missing something?
Also when you wrote ""EmpireDesignData/Datebase" folder" you mean check the EmpireDesignData/campaign_map_towns_and_ports.xml as well as database/campaign_map_towns_and_ports right? This prompted a pop-up with "consumer actions" when I clicked "select all".
I couldn't find a listing under EmpireDesignData/Datebase.
Also when using Bob I realised I wasn't creating anything until I checked the mod name under "data" in the "retail" section. Was I supposed to do this? I noticed it automatically auto-checked many boxes but I let it do its thing then deleted the extra stuff in PFM afterwards.
Thank you for all your assistance so far, sorry to burden you with more questions.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Hello again,
Firstly, thank you very much for your help. It seems that many problems I was experiencing were due to a file called "Rules" in the mod tools directory which prevented me seeing the "create Pack" option in BOB and lead to much confusion. (To any potential modders reading this, please check there first if you are having problems as I think it may be cause many problems).
Anyway I got there in the end and have been making good progress all across the board, with my games now looking substantially different than vanilla
. Unfortunately I haven't yet figured out how to change the starting location of clans without causing a crash and discovered that while the changed resources work, they will continue to display the names of the previous resource when clicked on. On top of this I also found that I cannot add resources to provinces which never had any to begin with. I haven't looked into it too much as I moved on to editing unit stats, adding starting traits and units as well as clan diplomacy settings - all of which went well.
Now I am attempting to alter retainers. I have successfully managed to change the effects but cannot seem to export the "ancilliary_triggers" to BOB for "packing". On paper the code for the action looks like it would work (Attempting to alter starting levels of certain legendary retainers and add specific conditions to others) but am unable to test without turning it into a pack. Can you or anybody else help me out with this or any of the smaller issues listed above?
Thank you in advance,
Fujisan

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Figured out that the triggers are controlled by a file called ancilliaries.lua and it needs to be exported with PFM, edited in notepad then inserted back into a pack you make. This allows you to edit what levels retainers are acquired, which clans can get them, and a host of other effects. It will also be key if you wish to create retainers from scratch I believe.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Hello to anybody reading,
I have managed to change the region specialties without any problems by following the above guide. However, and this is actually starting o drive me crazy, when I hover over the speciality building it will list it but say what it was previously. For example I change naval tradition to a smith and it looks like a smith, performs like a smith, but then still says naval tradition! I have tried so many combinations in BOB and searched for/through text to files in the hopes I could extract and edit what is causing it but to no avail. Is this hard-coded aspect or am I missing something?
Regards,
Fujisan

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Have you put the "campaign_map_towns_and_ports" table into your mod?

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
Yes it's in there. Everything is working except the provinces still say the previous text in brackets. This led me to believe it was an issue with the text files but honesty I've tried many things to fix and have hit a brick wall at this stage.

Re: Editing Province Specialities and clan starting location
I followed all the steps here and nothing happened. I don't know where I went wrong but doing exactly what he did I got no results trying to change the province specialties.
