Modern scientics stated a bit different. Stefan Kröpelin showed in his study of groundtypes in lakes in the tschad area, that the desertification started about 8000 years ago very slowly and finished about 2700 years ago.
after that time, human activities like deforrestation and overusing with goats and sheep herds corrupted more fertility than climate change did after this time - you can see this actually in northern china.

this process was forced more active under the islamic occupation (they didn´t have a tradition of farming).
it´s also lately shown that because of climate change over the last 200 years the sahara is regreening in many parts (expescially in the sahel-zone). many modern day conflicts in this area like in mauretania, dafur are related between the old conflict of herding and farming.

In the top picture, it would be the building behind the temple on the left, as seen through the obelisks standing in front of it (the temple). Unfortunately, I had to change the way the port looked because of a CTD I was getting with this settlement. Had to removed the palace and causeway on the far left. Apparently, there is a limitation in RTW as to how many objects can be used in a given settlement....and of course, I exceeded it. So something had to go. But the port still looks really nice even without it.

@Prince of Epirus: there is no download for these settlements.

Will the new version with this custom settlement released in the form of patch or stand alone? I would like to dl RSII but my internet data capacity is limited so if the new version is going to be stand alone I am going to wait for it.

It is possible that the new buildings and settlements could be released in a more 'generic' form. However, there would be problems. For example, the port cities are specific to the RS2 map, as the placement of the settlement and all of the port buildings is critical to everything looking right. The non-port cities would be OK, but changes would have to be made to descr_strat.txt in order for the game to use the new cities....ie, Athens, Corinth, Ephesus, etc. Each of them uses a specific 'SET' in descr_settlement_plan.txt, and that has to be reflected in descr_strat.txt.

As of now, this will all be very 'integrated' into RS2.8.

I really love your custom cities. When will they be released? Would it be possible to agree on some exchange and include parts of it in other mods?
I could offer loads of buildings (full package with icons, pics and description), ancillaries, historic events and other stuff from Rome Total History.
I also have some city environments that might interest you, for example Syracuse and Tarentum, as I haven't seen those among your work.

For example, this is Syracuse with the island of Ortygia, the Plemmyrion on the opposite, the Great Harbour, the theatre and the quarries with the Ear of Dionysus:

The city is actually based on a vanilla settlement and I guess with your skills it could be higly improved.

Well, I have to finish the RS2.8 patch first.....but I'd be happy to release the settlements to the community, and help where I can.

I like how you altered the map to look more like Syracuse did...nice work.

Now I've read on page two or three of this thread that Syracuse is ready. You promised to post a screenshot, but either I missed it or you never did. You also wrote that it can be seen in another thread, but I can't find it. Can you give me a hint?

Your work on cities is really superb and it seems you're doing a new one every week! I really can't wait to see the release!

Thanks, now I've found it. I didn't recognize it before. The buildings are great, but the landscape could actually be improved.

really? Roma Surrectum III ? Will you plan on adding new units/reskining some and balanced more the existing ones?

Is Roma surrectum mod foldered? I have EB mod installed and Im afraid I cant have both on my rome. Duplicating my rome directory doesnt work anymore because now I have steam version.

The settlements themselves are done. Now I'm working on correcting various bugs in units and traits, and making the settlements work the way I want them to.
It's progressing nicely....that's all I can say. Once done, it will go into a test phase.

Well, unfortunately, I cannot (no one can) do what you did with the topography in the Custom Battle editor. You made a custom tile, essentially, which is fine for Custom Battle settings. But it can't be used to represent a 'real' city on the campaign battlemap (otherwise, you can't conquer the city). It's too bad that can't be done, because a lot of cities could look way more 'geographically' historical if it could.

No units will be added or redone, except for possibly the Towered elephants. RS2 is no yet modfoldered, and does not work with the Steam version of RTW at all. After releasing the next patch, I'm going to try and create a 'Steam' version of RS2....but as yet, I haven't gotten it to work.

Maybe you could just add a note to your current post and reference Post #xxx in this thread as a continuation? I don't know how else to do it.
