Thread: The Host of the West

  1. #1

Default The Host of the West

Little after his call every vassal in the West answered Tybolt's demand and came in great numbers near Casterly Rock, a sea of steel and flesh. Banners raised high in the morning, burning bushes, circles, red lions, shells... Everyone gathering at the foot of the Rock, flocking around it's curtain wall and battlements. At midday the gates opened and from the bowels of the Rock exit a splendid force with the Lannister colors, the cream of the West and the Rock.

Tybolt wore a golden armor, with intricate filigree all over the chest-plate. His golden helmet was crowned by a three-headed dragon roaring and breathing fire. His roundels, lion heads, his gauntlets carved like it's paws. The horse barding fell to floor, long and flowing, embroidered with lions pasant and rampant dragons. Fang had been refurbished, the pommel now was in the shape of a dragon head, while the hilt was decorated with rubies, two fierce lion heads in each end.

His tent, a silken palace with several chambers, was erected in the middle of the war camp and a great banner was unfolded for the first time. The arms of Targaryen and Lannister impaled, red and gold, black and red, claws against paws, fierce fangs and fire...

The Lords of the West and its commanders are summoned.

Harmund arrives with only his own escort, and no soldiers. He quietly noted the new banners held by the Lannister troops, and recalled the death of the Hand being announced recently. The purpose of this army was likely not difficult to guess.

"I have left my forces at Goldentooth, my Lord," said Harmund once in the tent, "Until our strategy is devised their best use is to man the defences they have so successfully manned through every conflict."

    "Lord Harmund, sit please"

Lord Tybolt was standing behind a great table. His helmet, golden with a roaring three-headed dragon, rested on it. Dragons and lions engraved on his chest-plate surface. A dragon head and two lion heads on his sword pommel. The heavy mantle, made of gold and silk, held in place by two lioness statuettes.

"War has finally come. My uncle Maekar will claim the throne and the bastards will be cast down"

"What of you, my Lord?" asked Harmund, "If we are to depose King Haegon, surely it is you who should take the Iron Throne? You have the men, and the legitimacy."

Harmund had always had a feeling war would come once again when Daemon Blackfyre had allowed so many Targaryens to live.

"I'm the strongest claimant, indeed. And I will remain so. I belong to the West, Lord Harmund, this is my place. I have no desire for the Throne, for the crown is a burden. Right now I have the richest and mightiest realm in Westeros as my domain. However Maekar will own us his iron chair, and that would increase our influence even further, I expect to gain many things from this agreement, for me and the West as a whole"

He pitter-patters the table with his steel fingers.

"But we don't know what will happen when we gain the capital. Only the Seven actually know who will sit on it in the end... Our target now is to get rid of the Blackfyre"

He raises one of his eyebrows.

"Very well, my Lord," said Harmund, "Who are our allies? The King will have allies, also: finding out who is vital to our strategy."

"Hightower for sure, and he commands a sizable part of the Reach's large army"

He unfolds a map and points to Oldtown.

"Adding to that amount the professional troops he commands"

Then one of the golden armored fingers of Tybolt points to other locations in the Reach.

"House Tarly is married to Hightower, and Abelar's sister is Lady Tyrell. So we may get the whole stenght of the Reach, or at least a good part of it"

    He points the North.

"Karstarks stance is a mystery to all, and her ambitions are clouded, I'm uncertain what does she wish"

"The Riverlands were allied with Maekar, and I have been told of a betrothal between his heir, Daeron, and a Tully. However the wedding hasn't been celebrated"

    He points the Vale.

"Arryn's stance isn't clear, he was a suitor for Lady Myrcella's hand, so I expect some enmity towards myself and the West. Also he married into the Blackfyre"

"Thus we have our host, that of the Reach Lords and the Riverlands supporting us against the Stormlands, the Crownlands and the Vale. The three weaker than the West or the Reach"

"There are still two pieces in-game"

Points to the Islands and Dorne.

"My cousins at Sunspear and the Ironborn. Who will they support?"

Lord Reyne enters the tent. Clad in uncolored steel armor, with the helm in the shape of a lion, along with a red cloak draped over the shoulder and down the back. In his hand he carries a baton covered in red velvet decorated with golden lions and golden flat ends. A sign of his position as Marshall of the West.

"My lord, I have brought my entire levy from Castamere. I have left my professional soldiers to hold my castle against invading forces, if that becomes reality."

    "Wise choice, Lord Reyne"

He strikes the table with his mailed fist.

"I cannot fool you, Lord Lefford and Lord Reyne. The situation is in precarious balance; Dorne, the North, the Iron Islands, all could support either the King or ourselves, every one of them could unbalance the whole situation. Then, we would clearly fight against the odds"

    He points the capital.

"We must march on King's Landing as soon as possible. We need to take the throne swiftly, because we might find ourselves in a dire situation otherwise. My uncle should arrive soon if he wants a crown..."

"If the homeland is under threat," said Harmund, "perhaps it would be wise to leave a portion of our forces behind. We command over 60,000 men, and winter foraging conditions will make it difficult to move more than 20,000 in a single force along any line of advance. I would propose moving 40,000 men along separate lines of advance towards King's Landing and leaving a reserve in the Westerlands for purposes of defending our homes or reacting to changes in the war."

"Indeed, it will be difficult to maintain a force bigger than twenty thousand men on the field, thus we will divide our host in three"

Tybolt looks to Reyne for a second.

"A third of our forces will be left in the West, protecting Goldentooth and Lannisport from attacks. Our fleet will screen the shores preventing any attack from the waves. Castamere, rebuilt, will protect our Northern provinces and the coastline. Thus we'll have an effective reserve of men, and don't forget about gold, we have enough to rebuild our host if necessary"

"We will advance through the Rose Road, and we will avoid the Riverlands, we don't know how the foolish Tully would react, he's somewhat unpredictable and unstable. Of course we can crush the Riverlands' might if we wish, but we don't know yet who they will support. Thus we'll march through the Reach to the capital. The second force task will be shielding our southern flank from incoming Stormlander forces, that could hammer us against the walls of the capital. However we will try to keep our armies close, so in case of attack they could reinforce each-other"

Early in the morning, the sounds of a small host marching could be heard. Upon the horizon were the personal banners of Maekar Targaryen. His small host of some 400 men marching in good order towards the camp of the Westerland's army. Maekar sat upon his steed, clad in full armor with Dark Sister upon his hip. He was grateful that he had ventured through the Reach with no interruption. The Targaryen requests entry to the camp and an audience with his nephew, Lord Tybolt Lannister.

He's led to the great golden pavilion, there Tybolt is discussing the tactics with his vassals, wearing his splendid war-attire; his war-helm crowned by a three-headed dragon, the chest-plate with a dragon and a lion facing each other, lioness holding his mantle in place. Fang with a new hilt, with a new pair of lion heads and a dragon one in the pommel, gold, bone, silver wire and rubies.

    Tybolt raises his gaze.

"Uncle, join us, we were discussing the strategy to follow in the incoming campaign"

A maester enters the tent and leaves a message. Tybolt reads it carefully:

"Apparently the Kingmaker was murdered. And I received word from Lefford that the King plans to kill you, uncle, and has raised his banners. If he is advancing to Summerhall that will leave King's Landing undefended! And the King in the Stormlands, with the help of Hightower and other Reach Lords we could isolate him from the capital"

Then we must be patient. We must be sure that the King and his supporters departs for Summerhall leaving the capital wide open. I already have plans set up for when such a move is made, ravens that will carry an offer that hardly anyone could refuse.

Maekar adjusts the collar of his armor for a moment before raising his hand to stroke his beard.

The moment we are aware of his movement, we will make best speed for the capital and capture it in short order. We must be aware of any messengers and scouts. The King cannot be aware of our movements.

    Tybolt nods.

"If you have left your maester or a castellan behind he could warn us about the King's coming to the Stormlands. In the meanwhile we must keep our movements in secrecy"

The black-armored man, Tybolt's shadow enters the tent. He stands behind Tybolt.

I have a retainer at Summerhall keeping command. He is aware of his role to come. I ask that you send out regular scouting parties to keep an eye on the routes from King's Landing that either go towards the Stormlands or the Reach.

Tybolt speaks with one of the guards who swiftly leaves the tent.

"Scout have been sent, uncle. They will watch the enemy's movements so we may act and strike fast and deadly"

    He looks his uncle:

"My vassals and I were discussing our movements. The Host of the West will be divided in three, one will remain protecting our lands, the other two will advance through the Rose Road heading to the capital. One will defend the Kingsroad from the Stormlands while the main host would siege King's Landing"

Early one cold, winter morning, the sight of a large naval fleet slowly appeared before the horizon coming from the South. At the head of the fleet were three mighty warships, four decked behemoths filled to the brim with assorted weaponry including a catapult and a few small ballistae. Clearly, these warships were built to rule the waves and crush all who opposed them. Luckily for the city of Lannisport, the colors displayed on the sails appeared to be friendly. It has seemed that the Hightower armies have indeed come.

The towers protecting the harbor alerted the guardsmen who raised the chain crossing the entrance to the great war-harbor. Tiryon Lannister, governor of Lannisport, wearing half armor and riding a small horse arrives to the docks to receive Lord Hightower.

[OOC: Oz can decide whether Harmund is saying this after Maekar/Hightower are here or before.]

"My Lord," said Harmund after a short silence, "Lord Greyjoy owes us a great debt for the seat he currently holds in the Iron Isles. Perhaps we should avail him of this debt and secure, at the least, an agreement that the Westerlands shant be attacked by his forces in the coming battle."
