Hmm, I'll give you a hint.
It's one of the European countries and the period is WW2 (you may have already guessed).

First, i'm no WW2 expert, so if this answer is wildy off the mark please don't giggle too much. My own educated guess is:

    Soviet Union, Obviously WW2

(Part of me suspects it'll be something more obscure, like Free Polish, Free French etc)

I don't know what to look for in a picture like this, but my first impression is Russian, but the style of the collar looks the German style to me.

    It's not Russia.
    eldaran's guess is right.
It's a little more obcure than Russia.
Second hint is that the pucture was taken in Pacific theater.
They had colonies there and fought against Japanese.

Well, if I, Belisarius, the Black Prince, and you all agree on something, I really don't think there can be any further discussion.

England didnt fight in the war, Britain did!

    Proof

Britain and Dominions - Responsible for defending India, Ceylon, Burma, Malaya, northern Borneo, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, the Papua New Guinea/Bismarck Archipelago/Solomon Islands chain, and numerous island groups throughout the Indian Ocean and Central and South Pacific.

Few forces can be spared from existing war zones to protect this vast spread of territory and its supply routes. Britain's main base is at Singapore with its two recently arrived big ships. Three old cruisers and some destroyers are in Malayan waters, and a few old destroyers at Hong Kong. By now the surviving seven cruisers and smaller ships of the Royal Australian and New Zealand Navies are back in the area.

    It could be Dutch.

Dutch - Naval forces allocated to the defence of the many islands of the Dutch East lndies include three cruisers, seven destroyers and fifteen submarines.

it can't be any axis forces because that guy it holding a Thompson submachin gun. it would not be Russia because they didnt not right in the pacific until later in the war, and when they did it was in manchuria. Dont no if they used thompson's though, because they used the ppsh(sp?) series of machine guns.

Yes, you take the glory. :smile
    Ok, the second question.
    2. What's the name of this highly unorthodox interceptor fighter?
    Also from WW2.
