Does the Socket Bajonet give you an advantage in close combat, or is it the same as ring bajonet?

It increases charge bonus that bayonet equipped troops have. Beyond that, I don't think so.

iirc socket bayonet also has less chance of falling off. Note that after some time in a melee some of your infantry guys end up fighting without bayonets, which is supposedly should reduce their melee effectiveness. Socket bayonet reduces the chance to loose bayonet.

the ring bayonet increase reload time because the knife is too close to the barrel when the soldier ram the rod,
the socket bayonet restores reload time while retaining the H2H ability
