    Default Josefinos Army (Army of Joseph Bonaparte) 1808-1814

    Joseph Bonaparte’s Army 1808-1814

    The Army of Joseph Bonaparte was originally scheduled for inclusion in my Minor Nations/States thread, but with my decision to break apart that thread, the amount of information now available, the complexity of the changes more than merits its own thread. I have continued the format adopted for the Portuguese Army.

    Listed below are the sources I have drawn on to produce the information covering the period 1808 to 1814:

    Prontuario de las Leyes y Decretos del Rey Nuestro Señor Don José Napoleon I (Tomo I to III);
    Philip Haythornthwaite “The Napoleonic Source Book” & “Uniforms of the Peninsular War 1807-14”;
    Otto von Pivka Osprey Men at Arms “The Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars” & “Armies of the Napoleonic Era”;
    Rene Chartrand & Billy Younghusband Osprey Men at Arms “Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars Volume 3”;
    Coronel J J Sanudo “Base de datos sobre las Unidades Militares en la Guerra de la Independencia Española”;
    Luis Sorando Muzas & Massimo Fiorentino various issues of “Soldats Napoleon”;
    Jose Maria Bueno “Andalucia y sus Milicias”, & “Los Franceses y sus Aliados en Espana 1808-14 volumen 2”;
    Michael Oliver & Richard Partridge “Napoleonic Army Handbook – the French Army and Her Allies”;
    J Estrampes & Didier Davin “Le Bivouac” issues from 2010 & 2011;
    A Du Casse “Mémoires et Correspondance Politique et Militaire du Roi Joseph - Tomes 4 to 9”
    John R Elting “Swords around a Throne”
    Claude Lebrun for providing various materials.

    Information in English on the timing and detailed internal organisational changes has often been incomplete, confusing and contradictory and in some cases just plain incorrect. As more information has become available in recent years, the aim is to bring the information up to date. However corrections/amendments to the notes that follow would be much appreciated (where appropriate with supporting evidence) as it is quite possible that I have failed to identify all of the relevant decrees etc or misread/misinterpreted some of the information or some may not have been implemented.

    Some words of caution – strengths are theoretical; actual strengths were much lower and in some cases no more than a cadre existed, or units may even not have been formed.

    For Spanish Army Ranks and their British equivalents see post by Jeff Lewis at http://www.napoleon-series.org/milit...n/c_ranks.html

    Caballeria de Linea (Line Cavalry)
    Sources differ considerably on the number of regiments and whether in fact any were raised. A maximum of 6 existed on paper.
    The Sanudo database lists none.
    Elting's "Swords around a Throne" suggests up to 4 regiments.
    Oliver and Partridge say never a physical reality as only a few recruits.
    Chartrand and Younghusband say the 1st regiment may have partly been raised along with some cadres for others.

    Artilleria
    Details are not clear, but it appears that 1 regiment of 2 battalions was raised. The 2nd battalion being formed in May 1810. I have not been able to find a breakdown of the battalions.
    In addition a number of independent companies were formed:
    1810 May - Compania de San Sebastian
    1810 June - Compania de Almeria
    1810 July - Compania Fija de Artilleros de Malaga

    Hello. I dont want to sound ignorant - although I am - but, were all these regiments composed of foreign soldiers or forcefully conscripted spanish? I mean, there were really no french supporters native of Spain that willingly accepted to fight for Napoleon?

    Some units, particularly the Grenadiers & Tiradores were mainly French, the Fusileros de la Gardia were picked Spaniards (thought to be the best of the Guard infantry), Real Extrangero was a real mix of nationalities (cadre of French who survived Bailen, plus Austrians, Italians, Hungarians, Bohemians, Poles, Russians, Germans, English, Danes & a few Egyptians), Brigada Irlandesa was supposedly recruited from the relics of the Spanish Army's allegedly Irish regiments.
    The Guard artillery & Gendarmerie were Frenchmen.

    According to Elting "... recruitment of line regiments was hindered from the first by the Spaniards' fear that they might be sent out of Spain to campaign in Germany and Poland. Joseph gladly enlisted prisoners of war and deserters from Spanish regular forces and guerrilla bands, men who wanted only a few square meals, a pair of shoes, and a chance to rest up a bit before heading back over the hill with their new weapons and equipment. (The kindest of the many nicknames Spaniards gave Joseph was 'El Capitan Vestauario" - capitaine d'habillment.)

    So, when I do the voices for this units in MoE, it will be a mix of French for the guards mostly, and Spanish for the others....

    I wonder if for the Swiss regiment and Irish regiment of the 1805 Spanish army (before Joseph) I should use Spanish voices or something else.

    Sorry for the delay - just back from a short holiday.

    I would use Spanish voices for the Irish as I understand there were very few real Irishmen in their ranks.

    The Swiss regiments consisted mainly of Germans & Austrians. I expect orders would have been given in Spanish (or possibly German).

    Question: in your post above, you said the line infantry regiment had " 1 Granaderos; 1 Tiradores; & 4 Fusilieros."
    But in the plate you send me for the infantry uniform (with the two periods, the plate in Spanish), it says "cazadores" instead of Tiradores.
    So, which one is correct?

    Question: you did not list the light infantry regiments "castille" and "murcia". Will you add them later?

    The Royal Order authorising the formation of the infantry units does say very clearly "Tiradores" - see attached extract from the January 1809. The scale of pay also says Tiradores. I have not noticed another decree renaming Tiradores as Cazadores but will recheck the various decrees just in case (the records may of course not be complete ....)

    The Light Infantry will be added, along with a whole host of contra-guerrilla units....

    The one difficult area is the line artillery, as the only information I can find so far refers to 2 battalions but without any breakdown.

    Do you have some reference images for the milicia?
    And do you know if the uniform for the line cavalry, lanceros and artillery changed at some point?

    I have references showing evolution of the infantry uniform (coat with plastron and double button lines, then no plastron and single button), but only one ref of each for cavalry. And nothing for artillery except "probably same as French artillery"

    I will add the milicia picture(s) later - once I have scanned in.

    I have no information on whether the uniform for the line cavalry, lanceros and artillery changed at some point - there is also major doubts/contradictions on the number of line cavalry units (or whether in fact any were formed at all. Prontuario de las Leyes y Decretos are silent on this so I can only assume the compilers at the time were unable to track down the appropriate decrees).

    So far, although I created two periods for the cavalry, I haved planned only one uniform for both periods. But this can allow adjusting a little the stats for each period.
    Infantry have different uniform though.
