Breathtaking ! You are an amazing texturer !
Breathtaking ! You are an amazing texturer !
I don't know anything about historical art on these emblems and I'd really want to start to know a little bit as they are so amazing. If you don't mind can you copy the link (bc that's the fastest way for you) of the historical stuff that you use as material so I can open my eyes a little bit. Everywhere I look there's always that "common" imperial legionary shield.
Re: Vigiles - How about a mixture of oval shields, both in colour and design? The outer layer is inspired. I din't think they could look better, but there they are...Can't wait to send these grunts against the Mithridatic hordes! Well done mate
"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Octavian21 again."
The vegiles donned a shield called "parma". It was small and round. The shields from roman cav also has been called parma. Likewise some shields form the roman Auxillarie.
So I thing they had versatlile, but still similar pattern. Similar; all the same way. Versatile; much selfmade, like pilots painted their airplanes individuell.
So here are some examples for those shield patterns:

Awesome tweaks and great first cohort's shields!
I think vigiles' shield emblems should emphazise diversity and simplicity: moons, laurels, stars and so on meant either 'protection' or 'excellence' in roman art, so I think it would be wise to avoid them on poor units like civil militias. Maybe simple bolts or twisted arrows or basic animals like wolves (wolf is the Roman city's representation, so a proper 'ubran' emblem). Just my thoughts.
Your pictures show soldiers from 4th century AD, totally out of frame. The only sources I've read about Vigiles state that they weren't considered as militaries but used common military gear, the same that legionaries did. We can assume they didn't wear any body armor on most of their missions (including fire fighting). But they most probably used common legionary scutum of the time, not oval shields. I am open to any historical source about that, but I personally never found any.
I donīt care about the timeline, I just show up some ideas of similar shield with pattern...
And no, this examples show mostly aux inf of all time periods the romans where in germany. Mostly based on founds in germany. Exception: the pic. right above

Thanks for the kind words
Search for "Republican" or "Caesarian" scutum/shield. For the Laurel Wreath over Wings, I think there are plenty of re-enactors who paint their shields in that way.
Remember though, like you said, people are mostly interested in later Imperial stuff, and I assume more artifacts from that era survive than earlier ones. So I take
what I see on the net and create "Historically Plausible" things. I will link the things I use as inspiration if I have time later and thanks
Thanks for the kind words
Haha, thanks man, looking forward to the next time I get +Rep from you then
Taking a break from shields at the moment, but thanks for the material. Will see if any of those things will inspire some cool design later
Thanks for the compliment Gary
Like I said above, I'm taking a break from the shields. I was about to work on the Vigiles and Auxiliaries when I realised that I forgot about the world's
favourite Roman unit, the Praetorians. As I said last year, I never use them, but I mod them anyway for the community. So I started with the helmet I
personally call the "High Class Attic". I have started from scratch, and am working now in double the texture size so therefore much higher quality.
Base Iron, Brass and Bronze are done and now I'm doing the decorations. Higher resolution has allowed me to give you guys even finer details as you
can see in the screenshot below. These are pics of the Iron helmet in the process of getting bling'd up. Iron one is 75% complete, others are still the plain
base metal I created from scratch yesterday.
It's too bad those screenshots don't really show the details as that's the closest I can zoom before the soldier disappears. But in game, you will see that
they look awesome under all lighting angles and under different weather conditions. Hope you guys like where I'm going with these attics as this is the
most work I've put into modding Rome2 (even more work than the chainmail and scalemails!)

Awesome stuff! +reps
I suppose you are used to all the compliments and mine is just going to be the same as everyone else's. But I still have to say that your work is so awesome because it really is.
I love the helmets and, well, everything else about them .
By the way, you can zoom in more on a unit by hitting the 'n' key. It's called "dynamic zoom" and it doesn't make the unit disappear when getting in close.

Thanks for the compliments guys
Yep extremely useful, loving the feature now. I can actually see a lot of little details and thus, imperfections.
Thanks so much for telling me about it MagicCuboid and thanks for the compliments
Here's a small preview of the completed Iron Attic that Praetorians will wear. It is also a preview of the one Generals will wear.
General's one will have more decoration on the bowls, forehead and cheek plates. Extreme zoom really does not suit the texture
resolution I'm working in, but it shows some good details. Anyway the preview:
Now I'm moving on to the Bronze and Brass Attics, then finish up Praetorian's polish. And resume with shields.
I disagree. Even in that resolution dude I think the extreme zoom makes them look better. Gives extremely realistic up close view. Looks like what you'd see watching a movie or TV dude. They look better than you give yourself credit. Can't wait for the release of the Marian units.
You are making some miracles, these are some magnificent helmet ornaments !
Very nice kaz, very nice... Get down in them pixels boy
Whatever blow's your hair back man...
Looking awesome man! Good job!
Roman generals would be lucky to have worn one of your helmets.
Thanks for the kind words guys
Thanks man. I don't know if I've ever told you this; When I start getting fussy about the smallest details,
I tell myself, "Dude, they're only pixels... Leave them be!"
Here's the final look of the Iron and Brass Attics for the Praetorians.
I'm skipping the Bronze Attic as the General that wears Bronze gear will be wearing another type of helmet. Which reminds me,
does anyone know if the Pegasus is a thing in Roman art or is it just found in Greek art? I assume since Romans were very
heavily influenced by Hellenic culture that it would be plausible that a helmet could be decorated with the Pegasus character?
Also, can anyone guess which helmet mesh I'm using for the Bronze General?
