Not a book but a blog: A collection of unmitigated pedantry (aka acoup.blog), which a few days ago Had an article on the Marian reforms or how they weren't actually a thing. Specifically: Lots of military reforms that commonly get attributed to Marius were either already in place before Marius, or appeared long after Marius. They just all kinda get attributed to him because of interesting historiography reasons.

Definitely an interesting read in no small part because it directly contradicts the Total War standard.

very informative, thanks both for sharing. here is an episode of hellenistic age podcast where dr Devereaux discussed allied contributions and why the system worked so well. the most clear and succinct explanation i've heard so far: https://hellenisticagepodcast.wordpr...ret-devereaux/

also, an interesting episode of lectures by Adrian Goldsworthy (who needs no introduction); this one is on banditry and raids: https://youtu.be/i3e5ze-_VPc?si=ZznHqDZbX4Vr-yOI enthusiast historians aside, may be of use as a source of info/ideas to budding scripters/game devs.
