Default 4chan, trolling and its dangerous side effects

Split from How about that Ebola thing and moved to the TD.
The message-board 4chan has been rightly blamed for many unsavory Internet things: the celebrity nude scandal, the dangerous “bikini bridge” meme, the brief virality of the self-harm hashtag #cuttingforBieber.

Now, the denizens of one of the Internet’s least-principled places are attempting to propagate another tasteless meme: She’s called Ebola-chan, and she’s some cross between a prank, a witless joke and a truly vile strain of racism.

“Have you welcomed her into your heart yet?” Asks one post on 4chan’s “politically incorrect” message board, /pol/. “I’m talking, of course, about Ebola-Chan. The viral goddess of love and Afrocide … Our shrines and incantations give her strength.”

Ebola-Chan is not, needless to say, a goddess anywhere outside of 4chan’s diseased imagination: The character is a /pol/ invention, a cartoon mascot for the virus that could infect half a million people within the next four months.

In fan art — of which there is, surprisingly, quite a lot — she’s depicted as a pointy-chinned, wide-eyed anime character with pink pigtails that curl into the shape of the virus. Wherever she’s posted, users are expected to reply with choruses of “I love you, Ebola-Chan” or “thank you, Ebola-Chan.” But of course, they reply with all kinds of stomach-turning stuff, as well: hopes for Ebola to wipe out all of Africa, to strike other continents or demographics, and to otherwise “remove … [the] subhumans,” as one particularly racist post put it.

It’s hard to tell how much of the chatter is genuine: 4chan, with its reputation for both ammorality and mischief, has always attracted a crowd of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lolz-seekers along with the sincere racists, misogynists and homophobes.

Supposely it indirectly convinces a good amount of teenage girls to commit unhealthy diet in order to get that bridge.

Everything on planet earth can indirectly convince a teenage girl to commit unhealthy diet, it's part of being a teenage girl. That is really stretching it, I mean I was a young teenager during the "heroin chic" and the Anorexia look phase in fashion and on MTV, god MTV's ads back then where 80% fashion ads now those fads, they could potentially be bad examples for young teen girls since they actually glamorized being as skinny as a junky or someone with anorexia, but the bikini bridge? Oh come on

Well 4chan is the gutter that all the drags of the internet eventually spills into. No wonder they encourage attention-whoring.

Anything that propagates more ing Anime needs to be addressed. That and places where all those who were unpopular at school try vainly to fit in by attempting to be edgy.

Eventually, history will find 4chan to be comparatively harmless.

Maybe a place where future malcontents can be groomed and recruited.

I'm not aware of a time when "trolling" other people, especially strangers, was ever acceptable. It just didn't get attention because it was a fringe phenomenon.

Calling 4chan's activities "not politically correct" is really understating it, considering the real economic and personal damage they can and do cause.

Talking about lethal epidemics like they're just one big joke was never acceptable, in what sort of place do you live?

I dont know since im a child i hear jokes, about just anything, Jews/nazi jokes, 9/11 jokes, sometimes they do it on TV ffs.
    Stuff in natural disasters etc.
If its comedy we are talking about, i dont think there isrealy a limit on this things. Obviously alot of its funny factor depends on context.

I hear jokes about everything too, but normal people don't feel the need to drop a mean joke everytime they talk about these issues. And I don't know a single person who jokes about current catastrophes with any regularity, except maybe satirists, which is really quite different than praising Ebola for killing native Africans.

Comedy shows are a specific situation, you're meant to crack jokes at stuff. Though if it's comedy meant to be as outrageous and offensive as this for the heck of it, I do say it's incredibly bad comedy and I wouldn't want to be associated with the comedian.
