Thread: What are trade rights good for ?

In Medieval II Total War trade rights served a purpose.
If I recall correctly, if you sent your merchant on a certain country's soil with which you have previously made a trade agreement, then both you and the other country in question received extra money each turn.

Now that in Europa Barbarorum II the merchant units are removed (or at least I haven't encountered any of them so far) this trade rights thingy doesn't seem to make any sense. Do I fail to grasp the meaning of it, or are there really no benefits to it ?

yes you trade with the nations if you share borders with them or by sea trade... better the level of market you have, the more profit you gain, same goes for number of trade fleets available in your ports...

You dont need merchants for that, even in vanilla M2TW...

do not trade with factions that you do not share a border os sea link with.

It is generaly a good idea to have trade right with everyone you dont plan to declare war soon, even then it may be good to trade with them.
I had a province as Hayasdan that bordered 6-7 other provinces and it hat over 2k trade income. Important to note is that sea export generaly gives the most trade income and if you have lots of resources that the other provinces dont have.

I vaguely remember there being some downside to accepting trade rights with factions who you had no ability to actually trade with. Could you remind me what that is?

No it isn't; if they're a faction you can't actually trade with, your relations get worse if you have essentially unfulfilled trade rights.

remember though there are some links by sea trade , you just have to study the campaign map to maximise its potential.

Also, those links often change (sometimes because of port blocking), so sometime you dont get to trade with another faction via sea because you dont have enough trade fleets, but you still want to have the trade rights with them in case some of your fleets change the target... Also I think in my opinion the outcome trades are changed by the highest profit.

But why is that? Does the AI think they are not getting any money from trade because you're blocking their naval dockyards or something like that?

It's the bizarre way M2TW diplomacy is coded. I've no idea why, I just know that it is so.

Well at least it makes the player think before asking/accepting trade rights, whereas in RTW you would just trade right everybody and be done with it.

this philosophy doesnt sit well with the EB concept, imho, its too gamey. can you mod it so that at the very least the AI doesnt propose trade when it is physically impossible?
