After another week in the trenches of words, another wildcat from The House of Bodemloze has proven why House Bodemloze stemmed its roots from love of writing! Hitai de Bodemloze, has pleased the gods of Quill and Papyrus, by taking this week's competition win, with a tale nothing short of spectacular! Hitai's tale highlights the boldest aspects of war; torment, glory, pride, battered nerves, and uncertainty. As a soldier over-analyzes the killing of one of his foe, he realizes it is just one step closer to the next kill, in a war that seems to never end, as a consistent flow of soldiers replenishes the fallen masses, with no end in sight.

Matthäus Prinz cast his gaze towards the man he had but moments before bereft of life. Swathed in the blues of Paris and Marseilles, the young Frenchman’s eyes had glossed over the moment Prinz had run the lance through his heart. What bravery indeed, to deprive mere boys of any prospect to return home. Prinz felt sick.
With a heavy heart and heavier hand, Prinz twisted the lance he still held in his grip, loosening it from the boy’s ribcage and pulling it free. In a swift motion he impaled it in the mud below him and moved to dismount his horse. His boots joined the weapon’s tip in the sodden earth and Prinz winced as wet dirt sprayed across his imperial uniform. However, despite the pit in his stomach, he would rather see his regalia defiled in such a way than suffer the same fate as the Frenchman before him.
The boy was certainly dead; Prinz could discern that much as he moved closer to his fallen prey. Crouching down next to the prone corpse, he slid a gloved hand across the boy’s face, closing those wide, tortured eyes for the last time. However, before he could do any more to assuage his own guilt, he heard the thunder of cannons in the distance. It was time for him to leave. He hoped that the boy – wherever he might be now – would think him at least somewhat chivalrous.
Moving back to his horse, he struggled to find footing secure enough to remount. Eventually, after a few frenzied moments, he managed to seat himself once more atop his exhausted gelding. To think he was the descendant of a many an honourable knight, yet he could barely mount his horse. The irony of it almost made him smile.
Grasping his uhlan's lance and unsheathing it from the cloying mud, Prinz made ready to depart. With his free hand he pulled out a pocket watch from the breast of his tunic. Seven o’clock in the morning. The autumn sun would be rising soon. Yet after four years of tragic mornings such as this one, sunrises instilled in Prinz little hope anymore. He only hoped now that his weary steed could carry him back to Berlin faster than the enemies’ tanks.
