Thread: Working on Mac

    Default Working on Mac

    Hello,
Just for information purposes I have a Mac Version of rome total war with barbarian invasion (1.6).

Recently i have been trying to install mods and for Rome total war and it has worked, (i used this guide http://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/com...nd_rome_total/) the way i have done it is by opening the RomeData .dmg file where the folders 'data' and 'BI' are and pasting in the folders RTRPE and EB with all there data ect into the RomeData dmg, then when the preferences window opens to launch the game i select the advanced options tab and enter either "mod:EB" or "mod:RTRPE" and it works perfectly, i recently downloaded the .rar of what i think is the latest version of FATW and have been trying to get it to work, i first tried by replacing the original BI files with all of the one from FATW (i have since put the original BI folders back) however though it loaded the screen was a jumbled mess of images and stuff, and battles would never happen, it just seemed to freeze when the loading bar finished, what i then tried was to copy the ci folder into the RomeData dmg like i had done with RTRPE and EB, and selecting "mod:ci" for launch, though it launched as it should, and appeared to work perfectly, after trying to start a battle/ campaign/ historical battle (i tried many times) it would again not progress past the loading bar, if anyone can help it would be much appreciatd as i would very much like to play this mod, cheers.

If anyone knows alternate ways to be able to play FATW that would also be great, thanks

Hmm, well I dont think CI is the latest released version of the mod, that would be The New Shadow (TNS). There should be download links in this forum. Note as well that the mod folder for FATW goes inside the bi folder (in the same way the bi folder is inside the rtw folder) if that makes sense. It looks like you pasted it in the wrong place.

As a general rule never replace original game files when installing a mod either, hope that helps

The modfolder's name up to and including TNS is "ci".

Macmodhelp, you need to install the mod properly, following the installation instructions. Replacing BI files with the mod's files is certainly not the way to go. If you have downloaded TNS, the "ci" folder included in there needs to be placed inside the "bi" folder. Try following the method described in the link but with that in mind (that the 'ci" folder goes inside the "bi" one and not alongside it) and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks for the replies,
I've tried placing the ci folder inside the bi folder which is inside RomeData.dmg, however when i run barbarian invasion it just boots up as barbarian invasion, i may have forgot to mention that i did not download an installer, just the .rar as there is not way i could use the installer on my mac, if you guys know a way around this or a different way to get it that would be awesome,
    thanks again

There are installation instructions in the Downloads thread: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?365719

    BEFORE you get started:

This version requires BI to be patched to 1.6, so please make sure you have patched your game before trying to install and play. If you do not patch to 1.6, then you will be unable to play the campaign and the Historical Battles and you will start getting messages regarding scripts, models, files, the “select an item from the list” one and more. This has nothing to do with the mod, it simply means you have not patched your BI to 1.6 before installing.

    Step 1:

The FATW_TNS_2.6_Full.rar contains a folder named "bi". When you extract the files from the .rar simply cut the 'bi' folder and place it inside your *main* RTW directory; this usually is “C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War” or “C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War”, depending on the version you have. In any case, it is the directory where the RTW-BI.exe file exists.

    Step 2:

Make a shortcut for the RTW-BI.exe on your desktop. Right-click on it and select Properties. In the “Target” line paste the following:

    "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -show_err -nm -mod:bi\ci

If you have installed RTW to a different location, change the path accordingly, but make no changes to anything outside the quotation marks.
Now, the “Starts In” line should look like the following:

    "C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War"

Again, if you have installed RTW to a different location, make the appropriate path changes.

    Step 3:

You can pick an icon for the shortcut from the “bi/ci/icons” folder – the one we usually use is TNS2.ico.

If the game launches as vanilla BI, it's probably an error with the shortcut (or whatever Macs have to give arguments as input to the .exe). In Windows the mod's shortcut points to the RTW-BI.exe, but passes it a " -mod:bi/ci" arguement (among others), in order to let the application know where the mod's files are. Without that arguement the application would simply launch vanilla BI.

just to be clear is the bi folder meant to replace/overwrite the BI folder? eitherway, also i dont have a RTW-BI.exe i just a rometotalwar.app that opens up a menu like this , what i did try was placing the bi folder in (which removed the BI folder) and launching using -show_err-nm-mod:bi/ci in the advanced tab however doing that it would not even get past the loading screen without quiting

On mac if you copy a folder into a location with a folder of the same name it does not merge the contents, it deletes the original folder and everything in it, which can really throw you if you are used to windows. Try getting a clean .app file, opening it, then copying the CI folder, and only it, inside the BI folder. Nothing should overwrite anything else.

    Hi,
I tried doing this and though it opened, it would not pass the loading screen, it would just open for a few seconds and quit (i tried deleting the sound and fmv files but it made no diference) i aslo tried merging the files by using the options key but again nothing, its a pitty there isnt a wine installer or something buy yeah, im starting to think maybe it might not work with mac no matter what

Strange, if you can get EB and RTR to work I can't imagine there is anything in the mod that wouldn't work. Im reasonably familiar with macs but not with RTW on it, sorry.

Any other ideas on how i could get it to work? it look really good so it sucks that its probably not going to work, and i think the problem might be with mac because it either crashes when booting, or it will work perfectly but battles will never load, the bar will reach 100% and then the cursor will change from the FATW one to the regular mac one and it will stay that way until i quit it

Also the reason EB and RTRPE work is because they are in there own folder and i open them by selecting the advanced options thing in the preferences and entering either "mod:EB" or "mod:RTRPE", so theyre not actually in the data or BI folders theyre alongside them, which is what ive tried to do with FATW except as i said before although it 'work' the battles will never start (i used this guide to get EB and RTRPE btw http://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/com...nd_rome_total/ )

FATW is mod foldered, it goes in its own folder too. The only difference is that its folder (called ci) goes inside the BI folder, rather than alongside it. Have you tried putting it there and then using -mod:bi/ci in advanced options?
