I don't want to append this to the current thread on movement since someone's working out changes there already and I feel this would just be intruding on his efforts.
What I would like, I think, maybe...
Movement within faction owned provinces based on 10 miles per day, year round with health issues due to winter travel only for "venerable" aged FM/Generals.
- reasoning:
1. 10 miles per day is sustainable over long periods. The general population is well accustomed to walking where ever they go, or riding horses. Cars and bikes have not been invented yet, so the feet and legs of the general soldier are better conditioned to such things.
2. Winter movements were limited as much or more by available day light as they were due to weather. Winter has shorter days... but... moving within owned provinces means the routes are known, encampment areas are already mapped out so getting there after dark isn't going to be so much of a problem.
3. Winter health issues. The personnel of that period did have "winter wear" while moving about doing their thing. They also traveled with tents and had such things as portable fire places (braziers) to use in those tents. There would be various manner of lodgings for FM/Generals along any route of march. Personnel of that period were rather more robust than our own general population due to those prone to sickness and such dying off during their early youth.
Movement outside of faction owned provinces also based on 10 miles per day, but only during spring and summer. Same "winter health" set up as per owned provinces.
- reasoning:
1. 10 miles per day is still reasonable. Various terrain types might be cause for differences, but I have no clue whether or not such a thing could or should be scripted.
2. Fall would be split, half on movement (so five miles per day for that season) and half on establishing winter camp.
3. Winter camp in foreign and/or hostile lands would mean full stop (no movement) during the winter season.
4. If the threat of winter sickness is taken away except for the aged "venerable" types, then the loss of the FM made camps has no negative impact on game play. It might also make using those super FM commanders a bit less of a sure thing once they get old enough to be super commanders.
I don't intend this as super ultra uber reality type whatever of any sort, but I do believe it works the basics fair well.
As mentioned in a comment to one of my own comments in another thread, I believe that the difference between owned province movement and foreign province movement could be done in the same method as the rationing line of traits for FM/Generals moving through foreign provinces.
