Thread: [Submod] This Year in History

Default [Submod] This Year in History

If any of you played EB1, you remember the "This Year in History" events that showed up every four turns and told you what was happening in real life. I though they were pretty informative and helped with roleplaying, and I'm not sure why the EBII team decided to remove them, so I made a really simple submod to readd them. These are exactly the same "Year in History" events as EB1. They go to 212 BC. Unfortunately, due to what seems to be a bug in EBII, the year 272 BC happens twice (I did a fresh install and the issue was still there, so I'm pretty sure it's universal), so the 272 BC event will occur during spring of the "second" 272 BC, which is turn 5. After that, "This Year in History" will show up every four turns, in spring of the relevant year.

To install, extract the zip and copy the contents into your M2TW folder. Then, delete historic_events.txt.strings.bin in EBII/data/text. Don't worry, the game makes a new one. You'll want to back up historic_events.txt.strings.bin and the two overwritten files (descr_events and the campaign script) before installing. This is save-game compatible in the sense that your old games will keep working exactly as they were, but you'll need to start a new campaign to see the changes.

Credit to the EB1 team for making these events in the first place.

I hope you enjoy! Please report any issues or bugs you encounter.

Great work! I remember we did continue work on them, so I'm wondering why they are not in. Will definitely install myself!

Is it okay if I post a thread linking to this topic over at the .org forums?

    Lovely. Will install right away.

Didn't know they only went up to 212bc though. Guess I never played a game that long.

Thank you for doing this, Imareaver

Also, do you or anyone on the team know anything about the 272 BC bug? I still find it very strange and have no idea where it's coming from.

Any chance this returns officially in the next version(s)?
Then, as throngs of his enemies bore down upon him and one of his followers said, "They are making at thee, O King," "Who else, pray," said Antigonus, "should be their mark? But Demetrius will come to my aid." This was his hope to the last, and to the last he kept watching eagerly for his son; then a whole cloud of javelins were let fly at him and he fell.

Change start date to be the winter season. Currently it is summer, which is what causes problems.

Great little submod! Something you don't know you miss until it's gone.

I haven't downloaded it yet due to some hard ware issue (fried mobo) so I'll just ask the question:

Did you use the campaing script? There is a 'calendar section' which consists of if sections (to reduce processing time) with turn numbers that is ideal for this. In fact that is exactly what it is meant for.
Or did you use descr_events? Events in there always fire at the beginning of the year, meaning if you have multiple events in a year they will all 'happen' in the same round. Something that can be avoided by using the script.

winter\summer - this entry is in descr_strat at the top together with the turn per year\start date setting. Not save game compatible, eg will have only effect with a new game.

They're all fired from descr_events except for the very first event (the 272 BC one and the corresponding explanation of ancient calendars), which is fired by the campaign script on turn 5. Could that cause problems in any way? The only issue I've encountered is 272 BC happening twice, but as Moros said, that comes from descr_strat and has nothing to do with the submod.

It won't cause problems. Only the drawback(s) I have mentioned.
